Interviews offer employers short glimpses into your previous work, education and experience. Using the STAR Method (situation, task, action, result) curate multiple anecdotes that reflect your passion for the Culinary Arts. Think of your own personal short stories of how you were able to be nimble during a service, or how you were able take on a leadership task that had a great customer or colleague result. Practice telling these personal stories, so they are clear and concise, and detail what the issue was, (situation), what you had to do to positively impact the situation (task), what action did you take (action) and most importantly, what was the positive result. This is the most important and most often overlooked.

When you're in a culinary interview, it's your chance to let your passion shine through by sharing the stories that make you, well, you. Think about those moments that shaped your journey—the times you stayed up late, tweaking a recipe until it was just right, or when you had to stay calm and creative during a hectic service. These aren't just memories; they're the heart of your dedication to the craft. When you tell these stories, you’re not just listing skills—you’re letting your passion and love for cooking speak for themselves, showing the interviewer exactly why you belong in their kitchen.

During a packed Friday night at a bistro, our sous chef called in sick, and I had to step up. The seafood risotto special wasn’t turning out right at first, but after realizing the stock was too thin, I adjusted it, and the dishes improved. As orders surged, I managed the rush and kept the team on track. That night taught me the value of staying calm, adapting quickly, and turning challenges into opportunities to grow as a chef.

I use a portfolio to hold my cover letter, resume, and all of the stories I want to share. I snap pictures and I collect like a professional scrapbook. There are little 1-2 sentences on each picture but I have been sure to highlight the action that is happening in the shot. I would highly recommend a portfolio if you are a nervous person or if you just want to look cool.

Probably the most vibrant environment, the hospitality industry. There are bad places and good places to work, but you can learn something from both. Majority of time it’s up to the combination of management and staff to make the magic happen, not always it works. Because of customers, not being happy about service, being in a bad mood and making it complicated. Mistakes made from our side due to miscommunication, do not help. At the end of the day, the customer is the most important person in the kitchen or the dining room, they give the rating, we just provide a standard to them.

Be true to yourself, and don't be modest. In an interview it's the time to tell your story and what you can do in the industry. I've made the mistake of talking "general" culinary arts and the hiring manager was looking for specifics. If you've failed, share that and how you overcame that failure. When you've succeeded and blown expectations out of the water share that too. The culinary world is all about overcoming obstacles and making the best of the most stressful situations.

Hace poco cumplí 5 años que empeze de bachero en un bodegón de Cápital. Lavaba los platos y hacía los repartos en simultáneo. Después avanze rápido hacia ayudante de cocina, en solo unos meses, luego de 2 años, llegue a ser jefe de cocina. Cada paso me ayudó . Y si bien mí jefe no era muy exigente, mí maestro era tan apasionado por la cocina , que yo sentía que tenía que esforzarme muchísimo para estar a la altura de las circunstancias y poder sumar . The culinary trends of today are spiraling downward. Many eateries have lost their scope on what good dining is about. Like short ribs over noodles, fried chicken on the bone, ham, steak, quality pastries that are made on the premises.

Cooking is an art a passion you don’t do it just for money. because there is a lot of sacrifice that you have to put in. You have to know the roots of mother Earth and respected, what I see today the young society in the food industry they have no passion. They don’t want to work for many hours. They want the money without putting the work in.

There are many ways to incorporate trends into culinary interviews. For example when I was applying to be a bakery manager I discussed the sourdough culture trend that happened during the pandemic. This shows that you truly understand the current affairs of your position and this might allow someone to envision you in a role one day.

The concept is wide, but the homework has to be done, trending stuff and fashion is what is hot and attractive, but from my perspective, depending on the region, getting the ingredients, it varies so much that keeping it up requires a lot of research. And taking it to the next level would be thinking more and more detailed. I have seen some good places with modern food, looking great on the plate, but not that tasty or on time. I would rather keep it classy, so food is warm and doesn’t take 40minutes to prepare.

Staying on top of trends is important. Trends exist because it’s what the people want. Recognizing and staying ahead of them is essential to staying relevant and profitable.

Are there still trends in the industry? It seems everyone is doing the same thing - mix a little of this with some of that and BAM food. I remember when the fusion cuisine was just started to trend and I haven't seen anything like that again. There's great food and great establishments all around but as others have said there no longer seems to be higher dining. We need to get back to the basics of cooking and making our items in house rather than using a pre-made item.

En mí país la tendencias están a alcance de pocos.. O pocos pueden experimentar de ello. Yo estoy a favor de volver atrás , pasos simples, productos frescos y de estación.. Menús costeables para el trabajador de día a día. Y hacerlo sentir que come como en casa.

Las tendencias de ahora son estúpidas, solo hacen quedar mal a la buena cocina ,ahora lo que vende es un entorno bonito y la comida queda aparte , mejor dicho te cobran por el lugar no por la comida lo que yo digo para aparentar que estas en un ligar lujoso

I LOVE using a portfolio so I am about to reference mine a lot…but you can make a PowerPoint or prezi most likely as well to get creative and that gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. This is something that highlights things you are proud of from your work so never hesitate to take a picture of something you are proud of!

Café con leche y medialunas, Y clientes cotidiano, de esos que le preguntas con estima, como está la familia ?.. Cualquier cocinero debe entender plenamente la vocación de servicio.

En verdad en las entrevistas ya no les interesa nada de eso solo a muy pocos ya solo te usan ,te explotan y ya te dejan tirado , como todo sitio.

Since the culinary journey, i have multiple projects, i have small insta blog by the name @daguywhocooks I have small burgers cafe by the same name "the guy who cooks", i also have youtube channel by the same name, i teach culinary arts in a culinary school.

If you have only culinary education and little experience, highlight the kitchen labs that you have completed and list tasks in each lab. This shows experience and knowledge, even with little industry experience. For example if you have completed your Garde Manger course in Culinary School, list basic knife skills, cold food experience in: bound and composed salads, appetizers, canapes and open faced sandwiches. This shows understanding and knowledge without the actual kitchen experience.

Just never stop learning. I said yes to every single opportunity given in the culinary industry and it taught me quite a bit actually. I still learn more all the time as it is ever evolving and getting better.

El próximo año , comienzo la carrera de licenciatura en gastronomía, es un desafío enorme. Pero ya que entendí que quiero ser chef, voy por el título más desafiante. Espero disfrutar el camino hacia ese objetivo.

No sirve tener un monton de diplomas y de más si a la hora de la verdad te estresas en las horas picos de el restaurantes, todo eso se va al basura.

This is the "tell me what you want to do in 5 to 10 years" question. My vision today might not be my vision tomorrow or next year, let alone 5 years from now. When I first started as a chef I wanted to run my own small establishment, now 30 years later I never want to open my own place. I like playing with other people's money! And besides my passions have changed as my family has changed. Working 60+ hours in a kitchen has given way to a steady 9-5 with culinary arts as more of a hobby than a job. My vision now is to show people that true table to plate can be implemented on a personal level. The ugly pepper in the garden is still as tasty as the supermarkets, and you know what went into growing it.

One thing I found helpful was to try new things to find out what your thing is first because you might think you know and in 3 years time you could be vegan…you don’t know. Especially in the culinary field you never know where you are ending up. I wound up as a sushi leader and I had to translate to talk to my team and it was rewarding, challenging, but it taught me a ton.
