Even if a client's career goals differ from your background, effective support is all about adapting and understanding. Here's how to be there for them:
- Research their industry to offer informed advice. Understanding the landscape can help you provide relevant guidance.
- Connect them with resources or contacts that align with their ambitions. Networking is invaluable.
- Encourage their development through courses or workshops, fostering skills pertinent to their desired field.

I use a coaching approach by asking thought-provoking questions that will help the client think through their aspirations. Typically, I'll have them envision what the career may look like, so they can picture it. Ask them what may be in their way of getting there - barriers or beliefs? Then, ask, individually, what skills, experiences, knowledge, or network do you they think they need to get there? If they don't know, how can they find out? And, continue to explore paths to get there. Then, ask the client what they really want to commit to doing as their next steps... maybe 1-3 things. It's an empowering approach.
