If you want a productive virtual brainstorm you should act like a boy scout: Be prepared! Three things to prepare: 1. The specific issue you want ideas for. Formulate this as a question. It will make it easier to answer. 2. Send the question to your participants before hand. This will especially benefit the introvert employees that need time to think. 3. Prepare a virtual whiteboard with your question and sticky notes at the ready. Color code the sticky notes so each participant get their own color. Now, when you kick off the brainstorm you let everyone write at least one idea on a sticky note before anyone starts talking. Because the notes are already there and have personal colors it will nudge everyone to participate.

I want to throw in another option here and that is to ask the team their thoughts or jump to a specific individual. So many times as a leader, we think that everyone wants to hear what we have to say, and while that may be true some times, it is not always the case. Letting other people have some ownership and give other people onus will keep them engaged when it comes to something like a virtual brainstorming meeting.
