You can increase the team's respect for you if you handle the challenge well. If the challenge is offered respectfully the best response is to adopt a curious and open mindset. You should ask questions to learn more about the underlying assumptions, beliefs or experiences this person has that have led them to a different conclusion. Pay attention to the body language of the rest of the team. Is it possible they agree with the challenge? A strong leader is respected all the more for listening to others and considering different points of view. If the challenge is disrespectful, you need to shut that person down and tell them you'll discuss it in your office immediately following the meeting.

When a team member challenges my authority in a meeting, I stay calm and address the issue directly but respectfully. I acknowledge their perspective, then reiterate the goals and direction we’re working towards, ensuring the focus stays on collaboration and problem-solving. After the meeting, I follow up with the individual privately to address any concerns and reinforce the importance of unity and respect within the team. (I don't mind a little conflict here and there)
