Having spent 30 years involved with IT projects and almost 10 as an expert witness for IT disputes, I can assure you that you are not alone. Typically, the IT project is just the fall guy for failures of a wider business transformation. Project managers discuss managing the triangle of scope, budget and quality. Some also add risk to create a quadrilateral. However, the polestar must be business benefit realisation and return on investment. Too often, the business case is locked down during the inception phase. As a project proceeds, new information about costs, business needs, priorities and opportunities should be fed into the evolving business case. This should drive an evolution of scope, risk, pace, and test go/no-go points.
