Here's how you can give constructive feedback to your team as a programming leader.

1. Set clear expectations for work and feedback processes. 2. Explain feedback as crucial for skill enhancement and project success. 3. Emphasize feedback is about code/product, not personal. 4. Establish a safe space for constructive feedback. 5. Encourage team receptiveness and value understanding of feedback.

As an employee for a year, I have now become a Team Lead at my company. A good team lead always pushes their employees and provides ways to enhance their coding skills. One of my employees, who didn't know how to integrate APIs or create functions six months ago, is now an expert at API integration and writing complex logic. They started as an intern, but now they handle the entire frontend project for one of my clients. It’s a proud moment for me as a Team Lead, and I am proud of the team I have developed.

It's always practical to give constructive feedback. Never just say "it's not good" but not giving the "good" example from your POV. Doing a code review is not easy, and the point is not that you need to be correct or the code needs to be as you envision. It's someone else's code, their vision is also important, your input should be to try to have it better if possible but not impose your opinion. It's not your sole contribution after all, you are giving your opinion, the commit owner is more responsible for the code than you are

Best is to point out the problem, if any, and offer a way to make the code better but you need to be specific, not just "it's wrong"

Understand that the team effort is driving the project forward. No matter how good you consider yourself the team is always more important and you need to appreciate other's effort, even if they do small mistakes sometimes. Praise your team when they deserve it.

Balancing critique with praise in the same conversation ensures that the feedback is well-received and the developer feels valued. Make sure not to engage in any personal attack under the guise of being “constructive” and above all do not refrain from offering the critique as you are depriving someone of the opportunity to learn!

Encouraging two-way dialogue during feedback sessions promotes collaboration. Invite team members to share their thought processes and challenges, transforming feedback into a constructive discussion that fosters ownership and mutual growth.

Specific bullet tasks after a review are practical as dev can work on them more organized and they can make better progress like that. Also more feedback can be requested on specific topics

Always follow up to see if all goes well or if more feedback would help. Initial understanding of the feedback is important but continuous feedback is even better.
