To align a divided team on company values, I’d start by holding an open discussion where everyone can share their perspectives. I’d explain the core values in a way that connects them to our daily work, emphasizing how they contribute to both individual and team success. Listening actively and addressing concerns would be key. I’d also find real examples within the team where these values have been demonstrated effectively, reinforcing their relevance. Establishing common ground and setting clear expectations would be crucial. Ongoing dialogue and recognition for living out these values would help embed them into our culture.

In most cases company values are broad, overarching ones for which there’s not much contention. I mean who would have a problem with integrity, customer excellence, accountability, etc. The discussion needs to be around what do each of US do to support, demonstrate and live out these values in our day to day roles and activities. I’ve found it useful to develop with my team our own set of guiding principles that may overlap with the company values but usually compliment them. These principles reflect how WE agree to behave internally and externally.

As we say, in behavioural science, everything has at least two perspectives and both are correct, again with a different perspective. Hence, it is possible that team members may have different understanding of company values. It is also possible that we perceive a given scenario from a different background, knowledge or expectation. I would like to have open dialogue with the team to understand the difference of opinion and have examples if possible. Little elaboration would bring out the crux of the difference and then it becomes easier to come to a shared understanding be it integrity, respect, teamwork, or any such value having wide open definition.
