Be clear on what you want and need. I've been a recruiter, an outplacement coach and career coach and IMHO most people seeking career counselling want to know "how can I advance my career," "what should I be doing with my life," or "where can I work where I will be happy and make as much money as I possibly can?" Bottom line - I think most people want help finding a different job, and need more than assessments to achieve their goal. IF this is you, choose a pragmatic coach with business connections and experience. B2B business experience is great - someone who has former HR, Sales or entrepreneurship. Ask "how do you stay up to date on the job market?" "Tell me about the specific outcomes of your work with your clients."

If you're actively job searching, they won't do the work for you, however, through meetings and understanding your goals and objectives will ask questions to get you analyzing your options and approaches - are you setting realistic expectations? Have you done current research? Be open to feedback and new perspectives to help you achieve your goals faster.
