I think we are on same page, I also often in past experienced the overcrowding issue with keywords. I used to stuff out many keywords to make it ATS complain, but it resulted in negative.
I overcome this issue by abalysing my existing resume and finding out the bad keywords which was not making sense for my resume or it was irrelevant to industry. Then slowing I added new jargons and industry specific keywords.
