"People aren't friendly like they used to be." "Nobody knows how to interact anymore." "Why are people so mean?" I hear these comments all the time. It's not that people aren't nice anymore; it's that we're missing the opportunities to connect. With cell phones and BS hustle culture, instead of strolling down the street saying hello, we're heads down, practically sprinting, looking like we're talking to ourselves with AirPods in. It’s pretty wild if you ask me. So, I ran an experiment: I made it a point to look people in the eye and smile. And guess what? 80% of the time, they smile back. I also promised myself that if I see something about someone that I enjoy, I tell them. This morning at the coffee shop I complimented the barista on their bandana and learned I for only $1.50 I could get one too, from Daiso USA. Not only that, their face LIT up, made my whole damn day by 8AM. If the space you’re in doesn’t have the energy you want, you have the power to change it. Should you do it all the time? No. Can it be exhausting? For sure. But, a lot of times, we have more power than we think and it doesn't cost anything. Don't just look at people, see them. Acknowledge their existence and I bet they'll see you too.
