You might think about the concept of #interoperability mostly in the context of a doctor's office, a hospital or a clinic. But it's also essential to providing quality pre-hospital care, such as when patients are being attended to by paramedics en route to a hospital. In this video podcast, titled From Ambulance to Hospital – Bridging the Interoperability Gap in Emergency Care, Peter Birch speaks with Stacey Clifford and Chris Royle from Dedalus about interoperability, and how structured data and interoperability, supported by a clinical terminology such as #SNOMEDCT, are transforming ambulance workflows in Australia, giving paramedics real-time access and equipping hospitals with a clearer picture before patients arrive -- a game changer for first responders and the entire health system. A recently released global report on #nursing identifies five emerging policy priorities in the areas of advanced practice nursing, gender equality, #digitalhealth and technology, the climate agenda, and nurses in situations of war and conflict. It also outlines the need for nurses worldwide to competently utilize digital technologies across areas of professional practice from education to practice, research and management. SNOMED International has long supported this goal in many ways, such as by including nursing content in #SNOMEDCT, supporting our Nursing Clinical Reference Group, and ensuring nursing is on the agenda at our Business Meetings and Expos. A recent Canadian-based study that looked at the impact of adverse drug events (ADE) developed a #SNOMEDCT value set for symptoms and diagnoses to standardize ADE documentation and improve ADE data integration into electronic medical records (EMRs). The study analyzed 5,792 ADE reports from the ActionADE system across nine hospitals in British Columbia, identifying 827 unique symptom and diagnosis terms they then mapped to SNOMED CT concepts. The researchers say that ongoing refinement and improved clinical usability are essential for the widespread adoption of the value set and recommend that future research assess the impact of integrating this value set into EMRs on ADE reporting. pharmacovigilance, and patient safety outcomes.
