We were founded by community organizers, so when we seek change, we do it by bringing people together. That approach begins at home, on the South Side of Chicago, where we are building the Obama Presidential Center. The Center represents a historic opportunity for Chicago: a chance to build a world-class museum and public gathering space that celebrates our nation’s first African American President and First Lady, steps away from where he began his career, where she was raised, and where—together—they made their home. But that approach extends to all our work, whether it’s holding leadership training sessions in communities throughout the U.S., bringing local leaders together in countries around the world, working to support the global education of girls, or ensuring young men of color have pathways to opportunity. Obama Foundation 🤝🏽 Chicago Sky WNBA, what a collab! Last week participants from the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance, My Brother's Keeper Alliance, and Futures Series programs heard from professional sports experts during a special career panel with staff from the Chicago Sky. To end a day full of excitement, the group took their seats to cheer on the Sky vs the Washington Mystics. Thank you Nadia, William, Jay, Autumn, Dwone, Awvee, Elizabeth, and Nia for showing these future leaders the many paths to working for a professional sports team – including community engagement, marketing, and even team ownership.

We had an amazing day at the 53rd annual Mexican Independence Parade across Little Village! This year’s theme “Celebrando Nuestras Tradiciones,” highlights the rich tapestry of Mexican traditions in Chicago and across the United States. Shoutout to the Foundation’s Latinx Affinity Group and Foundation colleagues who helped create our trolley decorations, inspired by the beloved game of lotería.

🏀 What a night with the Chicago Sky WNBA! Participants from the Girls Opportunity Alliance, My Brother's Keeper Alliance, and our Futures Series programs had the chance to speak to some of the incredible people who help bring the professional basketball games to life at Wintrust Arena. “I don't have the words to express how it moved me, and what I want to do now is just go sit outside and stare at it for a while,” —Julie Mehretu. Earlier this week, we announced the commission of a glass installation titled “Uprising of the Sun” by renowned Ethiopian-American artist Julie Mehretu at the Obama Presidential Center Museum building. During the installation of the 83-foot-tall piece, we caught up with the artist to learn more about what this moment means to her.

Today we remember the lives lost during the September 11th terrorist attacks. During his time as President, Barack Obama shared how the survivors and loved ones of those who were lost continue to inspire him with their grace and strength. “In the names of those you’ve lost, you’ve started scholarships and volunteered in your communities, and done your best to be a good neighbor and a good friend and a good citizen. And in your grief and grace, you have reminded us that, together, there’s nothing we Americans cannot overcome.” In this 2011 photo, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are joined by President George W. We’re excited to announce that we’ve commissioned renowned Ethiopian-American artist Julie Mehretu to create “Uprising of the Sun,” an 83-foot-tall x 25 ft wide glass installation that will be featured in the exterior of the north side of the Museum Building of the Obama Presidential Center. Her art has served as a powerful bridge between past and present, as well as personal history and public space, in ways that captivate and inspire. Drawing from President Obama’s remarks at the 50th anniversary of the marches from Selma to Montgomery, Julie believes this monumental glass window will reflect the historical context of his presidency, inspire viewers, and draw visitors to visit the Center.
