Hybrid power plants should be able to systematically replace older combustion turbines anywhere in the world. The current push to install new fossil-gas power plants to meet computing demand is incredibly backward looking. The world is changing so fast at this point, if you try to advance while looking backward, you're going to end up flat on your ass, getting trampled by the people passing you.

Energy storage offers opportunities for balancing electric supply and demand, and represents a key piece of the puzzle in ensuring our transition to cleaner energy can maintain the reliability of New York’s electric system. Recognizing this need, and in response to state law, the Commission established a 3GW energy storage target in 2018. Since then, in partnership with NYSERDA, NYISO, utilities and others, we’ve explored and refined various strategies and actions encouraging the integration of battery storage. Yesterday’s order reaffirms the importance of energy storage, establishing a higher 6GW goal, and supporting programs to cost-effectively increase growth to ensure the pace of energy storage development can meet our growing needs. The New York Solar Energy Industries Association (NYSEIA) has released a report and a new goal that asks the State to boost its distributed solar goal of 10 GW by 2030 to reach 20 GW by 2035. While utility solar lags in the state, community solar and rooftop solar are filling in and thriving. New York has about 3 GW of rooftop solar and nearly that amount of community solar. National Grid customers across New York City will face higher gas bills. As of Sept. 1, customers who use the utility's gas to heat their properties will, on average, see an additional $30 charged to their monthly bills in Brooklyn, parts of Queens, and Staten Island. This rate hike was approved by state regulators last month, primarily to fund $5 billion in new investments that National Grid plans to make into New York’s gas system. Reasons Con Edison Customers Might Be Paying More for Natural Gas than National Grid Customers: Different Supply Contracts: Utilities like Con Edison and National Grid often enter into different long-term contracts for natural gas supply. If Con Edison secured contracts during a period of high prices, these costs would likely be passed on to their customers. Infrastructure Costs: Con Edison may face higher infrastructure costs related to the maintenance and upgrading of pipelines and delivery systems, especially given the dense urban environment of New York City. These additional costs can be reflected in customer bills. Customer Base and Usage Patterns: Differences in the customer base and average usage patterns can influence the pricing strategies of utilities. For example, if Con Edison serves a more diverse customer base or a larger number of commercial entities, this could impact how costs are distributed. Regulatory Environment: Con Edison and National Grid operate under different regulatory frameworks and rate plans, which can affect pricing. The Public Service Commission in New York may approve different rates for each utility based on their specific costs and service requirements. Energy Source and Hedging Strategies: The price discrepancy could also result from differing hedging strategies against fluctuating natural gas prices. The Massachusetts Clean Peak Standard (or CPS) will help #renewableenergy developers and operators further increase returns on storage assets. In addition to using #batteries for energy arbitrage, ancillary services, solar firming, curbing curtailment, and more – operators leveraging this program are awarded for having renewable energy available to contribute in what were already the most lucrative hours. Projects able to capture Clean Peak Energy Credits (or CPECs) by combining accurate forecasting and operations that ensure operators deliver into peak hours, will have the winning formula to support grid reliability and maximize revenue as MA transitions the grid. The Maryland Energy Administration has launched the Maryland Solar Access program, aimed at providing significant incentives for income-eligible Maryland households to install solar panels. Eligible households can receive up to $7,500 based on a $750-per-kilowatt incentive for direct current solar capacity. The program aligns closely with the recommendations from the 2023 Maryland Task Force to Study Solar Incentives and aims to help Marylanders reduce energy bills and carbon footprints. Grants will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, and solar systems owned by third parties will qualify. Additionally, the program replaces the Residential Clean Energy Rebate Program, and Maryland also promotes standardized solar permitting through the Solar Automated Permit Processing Plus (SolarAPP+).
