Day 1 of restarting my transformation journey. Today was a whirlwind of recording—about 2 hours of footage, trying to figure out what my story should be. Sitting at the editing table, ideas were floating around: should it be emotional, motivational, or serious? In the end, I chose a little comedy to present my story. Laughter is the best way to connect, after all! Here's to embracing the process with a smile and a sense of humor. Just listening to some gems from comedian Jimmy Carr. He appears on my humour map and typifies the quadrant of DANGER and EDGE, known for his belligerent style and nasty put downs. But on Steven Bartlett's "The Diary of a CEO" he shows a new side to him. I was particularly struck where he says from about 04:55 on: "I'll figure out how to do it, I'll figure out what the code is, and I think often it is that thing of like, the thing that comedians do incredibly well, like the super power of comedians, what comedians do brilliantly, is they're great at pattern recognition and that strikes me as the most important thing in life for humans...Cracking the code on stuff..." At the superficial level, semioticians and comedians have something quite obvious in common. Both are outsider figures who work at the margins of culture and are often seen as eccentric provocateurs. One classic semiotics practitioner I seem to remember in a paper once said that his clients used regard him and treat him somewhere between Moses and an idiot savant. Malcolm Evans deconstructed the idea of the 'fool' in Shakespeare as a sort of carnivalesque sage / prophet. Semioticians study humour too. Canadian Paul Bouissac has written extensively on clowning and the circus, a highly semiotic entity. But if we look closer we can see more parallels. Both of them are disciplines that rely on: 1. Rich observational detail  2. Surprising connections 3. Revealing cultural norms 4. Insights and epiphanies 5. Subverting the status quo I guess the good news from my perspective is that long terms information age trends are on our side. Given that the easy to replicate rote tasks are the ones which will be devastated first by the coming AI revolution and the higher order thinking skills and pattern recognition will be the last to go. https://lnkd.in/guHp-Diq Now as semioticians we could all try to be a bit more entertaining too - even if we tell insights, not jokes! We teach that 90% of people spend about 90% of the time on the drama triangle. Like good dramas at the movies, all drama has characters that play certain roles: a victim, a villain, and a hero. Victim - Is at the effect of Villain - Blames and criticizes Hero - Seeks temporary relief Drama is characterized by blame, wanting to be right, toxic fear, and adrenaline. Every role in the drama triangle is a form of victim consciousness. If we really want to shift what's going on, we need to get off the drama triangle.
