Women entrepreneurs, especially women of color, continue to face significant challenges in securing funding, despite being one of the fastest-growing segments of small business owners. So, what can be done? Earlier this year, Block Advisors by H&R Block launched the “Fund Her Future” small business grant, offering up to $100,000 in grants plus small business services. Jamil Khan, Chief Strategy and Small Business Officer for H&R Block, and Heather J., CEO of Allégorie Inc. and ‘Fund Her Future’ grand prize winner were recently interviewed on "The Small Business Radio Show with Barry Moltz." Well, we have talked many times on this show about the unique challenges that women and entrepreneurs of color face in getting any kind of funding for their business. And it's good to hear that at least one established company is doing something about it. My guests are Jamil Khan, who's the chief strategy and small business officer for HR Block. Heather Jong is the fund her future grant winner with her company Allegory, a small business founded in 2019 to provide leather alternatives through plant based fashion accessories, ultimately helping to reduce. Food waste and greenhouse gases. So Jamil talk about why H&R Block set up this fund the future so that women owned businesses continue to be on the rise. They're growing at nearly double the rate of those owned by men. Over the last five years, we've found that women owned businesses were more likely to make less money and be declined for loan than mails and disparities. You know, was was something we wanted to help address and we felt like, you know, we want to help underserved segments of the population and help them. Right, You know, we're here to help small businesses grow and it's just so much opportunity. So tell us about your business, Allegory. How did you get started? You're the cofounder. Allegory is a small batch accessory line based in New York City. We focus on reducing food waste and convert those into premium fashion accessories for all genders. The idea really started with reducing food waste. It's something that I'm passionate about and I've been, you know, volunteering with a local. Organizations about exporting food to those in need and it all started there. Then eventually we came with the idea of like, let's create is something that people use everyday. So it can be a reminder that hey, you know, we can do things differently. And there is a new circular way of of the economy or business model that can, you know, help with reducing carbon footprint and creating something that's beautiful and long lasting and fun.
