The percentage of Latinos in active duty rose again to 16% in 2017, according to a report done by the Congressional Service Review, and 17.2% in 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. The veteran population is expected to become more racially and ethnically diverse in coming years. “Between 2021 and 2046, the share of veterans who are non-Hispanic White is expected to drop from 74% to 62%,” according to Pew Research. “The share of veterans who are Hispanic is expected to double from 8% to 16%.” Latinos have earned more than 40 Medals of Honor, according to the Department of Defense. Today we celebrate a landmark moment in American history, Juneteenth – a day that signifies the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States 159 years ago.  Also known as Freedom Day, it’s a day that is not only a celebration of freedom and human rights, but also a stark reminder of the resilience, strength, and contributions of African Americans to the socio-economic fabric of this nation. This day serves as a reminder that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords but values that we should integrate into both our personal and professional lives. And as a community of professionals, while we strive for success, innovation, and growth, we should also be striving for understanding, empathy, and solidarity. So, as we commemorate Juneteenth, let's do more than just remember - let's act. Today and always, let's educate ourselves, engage in meaningful conversations, and make tangible efforts to ensure that our workplaces reflect the values this day represents. How does our understanding of the past shape democracy today? Loook closely at the images here and reflect on the disservice we do to the people in these photographs (and ourselves) when we fail to confront to horrors of Slavery, the role it played in the Confederacy, and the way these narratives shape our understanding of the Reconstruction.

Juneteenth for many in our country is a day of celebration, marking the at least symbolic end of slavery in the United States on June 19th, 1865. It is an important celebration that should be honored by all, particularly as many would want to erase part of our history. Given that this day was over 2 months after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, almost 3 years after the Emancipation Proclamation (which only applied to areas occupied by Confederate forces), and a month after the disbanding of the Confederate military department in Texas (not to mention after the ratification of the United States Constitution decades earlier), Juneteenth can very possibly be an example of the Rev. Dr. King's statement that "justice too long delayed is justice denied." I believe those of us who identify as white and continue to enjoy the privileges our culture extends with that, we must be mindful of the ongoing work we each need to do both internally, in our families, our communities, our places of employment, in our civic engagements, our faith communities, and any other sector of our lives as we move toward equity and inclusion for all persons. For many of us, we must be careful not to think a celebration absolves us from the work that still needs to be done. Dr. Jemar Tisby speaks to Juneteenth [https://lnkd.in/gTSgeH4H]. President Joe Biden didn’t do that before he did it. He issued the proclamation declaring March 31, Easter Sunday, the Trans Day of Visibility. Then when asked if he considered how Christians might feel a bit slighted over Jesus’ Resurrection having to share the stage with RuPaul, Biden said, “I didn’t do that.” A la the "I did that!" stickers on gas pumps, I wonder who will be first to market with the "I didn't do that!" stickers to affix to copies of Gender Queer in your kid's school library, on postings for Drag Queen story hours, on Rachel Levine's uniform, on Mayor Pete & Chasten's swing, et al. The damage control spin was that Biden meant he didn’t do that because the Trans Day of Visibility was established in 2009 during JoeBama’s first term. Yeah, it turns out the proclamation of the state’s culture war against Christians and people of faith in something other than government was declared 15 years ago and few bothered to take notice. What was the big deal? It was just a kitschy designation day. How about now? Couldn’t Biden just have moved the date, as some Christian Political Pacificists suggested? Well, first, with 144 days already committed to LGBTQIA2S++++++++ there are only so many dates on the calendar to get that Day of Visibility squeezed in, you know? Second, how is it they’re not getting through to you? You defer to them. Got it. This is not a reciprocal arrangement. Which part of the complete reordering of society to accommodate then celebrate then demand all celebrate the ravings of the mentally ill is unclear? The bathrooms? The sports? The removal of parental rights? The mutilation of children? We are dealing with people who argue simultaneously that race and gender are mere social constructs AND that society should award benefits—reparations, admissions, jobs, contracts--based on these invented identities. To speak the truth is to hate. To embrace the scam is to love. Bernie Madoff could’ve learned a thing or two from the identitarian Left. They promise a judgment free society while presenting you with a binary choice. Make the wrong selection and their judgment is delivered with a sledgehammer. For 15 years—and frankly many years before that—they’ve been priming your kids in their schools with messages like this one from U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. The seeming overnight success, to most Christians, of the New Marxists in converting nearly 1 in 3 Gen Zers to identifying as part of the Lavender Bunde was like overnight successes in other sectors: the result of decades of diligence in the shadows.
