It's been a year since the Newburgh Enlarged City School District implemented the cellphone ban using Yondr pouches. The results have been noteworthy: 1. Increased Focus and Reduced Distractions: Students are more engaged in their lessons without the constant distraction of cellphones, leading to better academic focus (News 12 - New York, NYSSBA). 2. Improved Social Interaction: Without phones, students are interacting more during breaks and lunchtime, fostering stronger peer relationships (NYSSBA, Newburgh Schools). 3. Enhanced Classroom Management: Teachers report easier classroom management and fewer disruptions, allowing them to concentrate more on teaching (News 12 - New York). Despite some initial challenges and mixed reactions, the overall impact on students' academic engagement and social behavior has been positive, aligning with the district's goals to create a more conducive learning environment. https://lnkd.in/ehb3n7CD

The Association of American Educators (AAE), a national professional association serving educators in all fifty states, today releases survey results revealing overwhelming support by educators for restricting student access to cell phones during the school day, with 70% of survey respondents supporting a ban on cell phone use during the entire school day, and another 26% supporting a ban on cell phone use only during class time (but permitting students to use them during non-instructional time). Less than 2% of respondents supported policies permitting unfettered cell phone use. Furthermore, 70% of respondents ranked cell phones in schools as one of the top five concerns educators face for the school year. From a list of common concerns, cell phone use ranked second behind only student achievement as the greatest concern. Other top concerns selected by respondents include educator burnout and the impact of teacher shortages, both of which ranked well above gun violence and grade inflation. https://lnkd.in/gVXSrcpi

👩🏫✨ 📵 Eliminating phone use during class enhances focus and engagement, reducing distractions that impede learning. It fosters a more disciplined environment, allowing students to participate in discussions and fully absorb material without interruptions. Additionally, it encourages face-to-face communication, critical thinking, and active listening. 🏫 Schools promote a healthier balance between technology and education by minimizing reliance on phones, ultimately improving academic performance and student well-being. 🧑🏼🎓👩🎓👨🏽🎓✨🫶🏼 https://lnkd.in/gPTCJUXc

Great article around creating cost effective sensory solutions for each classroom. I love the idea of creating a sensory bulletin board in the corner highlighting strategies for self regulation and positive affirmations for the students. If you need ideas, this is a great starting point! #sensoryfriendly #sensoryspaces #inclusiveeducation #inclusivelearning

One of the most recent topics in Ontario Schools is the implementation of the cell phone ban in classrooms. As an educator, like those who voice their opinions in this article, I have concerns and mixed feelings on this ban. Superintendent Joe Bell states in this article "We're trying to develop and foster good habits," in regards to average screen time for students, however I do not see bans as the solution; in fact such bans have been tried before in the recent past and have not proven to be the solution to this issue (https://lnkd.in/g5Z2YqBB). Bans do not help foster good habits. Instead, cellphones and other forms of technology should be viewed as an opportunity to enhance student learning, and through the teaching and co-creation of programs and already existing curriculum we can help students learn how to “develop and foster good habits”. Cellphones are one of the many advancing technologies that will continue to evolve and remain a part of the everyday lives of both educators and students. As such I believe that in order to help ““develop and foster good habits” we need to teach students about the healthy, safe and respectful use of these devices, allowing us to turn what we currently view as a distraction into one of the most valuable learning tools to enter the classroom.
