Let's talk about the talent pipeline...
It was with much interest that I listened to Kwame Kwei-Armah on Radio 4 this morning talking about his reasons for stepping down from the role of Artistic Director at the Young Vic after six years in post.
“The painful reality is I am leaving a subsidised sector where 13 years of standstill funding is taking its toll,” he said. “For decades the theatre industry has fuelled the UK’s world-renowned creative industries, providing vital pathways for artists to flourish, going from subsidised theatre, into the West End, and into TV and film. But without investment we could lose this pipeline of talent within a generation. I’m hopeful that this can and must change but it needs sincere government intervention.”
We couldn't agree more, however, the talent pipeline starts with our kids in schools.
The landscape of creative arts education in the UK is facing a critical challenge. How do we expect to have a flourishing industry when the lack of investment at schools and grass roots levels is ignored?
The absence of these subjects from mainstream curriculum creates exclusivity, hindering talent development for underprivileged families who can't afford private lessons. This trend leads to a decline in the creative talent pipeline, impacting progression into our space at further education level and subsequently higher education.
How can we spot the talent in 16-19 year olds and feed our drama schools, conservatoires and universities if young people don't get the opportunity to see what they're good at, or love, at school?
Our mission is clear: ensure the accessibility of creative arts education to every child! Despite financial constraints, at BN1 Arts we are committed to providing spaces for young creatives through extracurricular activities in music, dance, and performing arts as well as our fully-funded diploma courses.
The young people pictured are the lucky ones - they are supremely talented musicians, actors and performers. They are ambitious and study at BN1 Arts. But what about the rest? What about the young people that don't find their way to us?
