Alan Sillitoe was an English writer and one of the so-called "angry young men" of the 1950s. He disliked the label, as did most of the other writers to whom it was applied. He is best known for his debut novel "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning" and his early short story "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner", both of which were adapted into films. Sillitoe also served as a wireless operator in the Royal Air Force during the late stages of World War II and later in the Malayan Emergency.

" โItโs a treat being a runner, out in the world by yourself with not a soul to make you bad-tempered or tell you what to do.โ โthe long-distance run of an early morning makes me think that every run like this is a life- a little life, I know- but a life as full of misery and happiness and things happening as you can ever get really around yourselfโ "
