Evan Hunter was an American author and screenwriter who also wrote under a number of pen names, most notably Ed McBain, used for most of his crime fiction. His 87th Precinct novels have become staples of the police procedural genre. Several of Hunter's books have been adapted into major motion pictures including "Blackboard Jungle" (1955), "High and Low" (1963) by Akira Kurosawa (from "King's Ransom"), "Last Summer" (1969) and "Mister Buddwing" (1966). He also wrote the screenplay for "The Birds" (1963). Hunter also served in the United States Navy during World War II.
