There have been many renditions of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol but one thing is clear. Alastair Sim is not a Scrooge, he is the Scrooge. He brilliantly plays Ebenezer as far more than simply being a crabby old man. Scrooge is devious, heartless, highly intelligent, and arrogant. He’s as stingy with himself as he is with others.
There’s also something very special about the movie directed by Brian Desmond Hurst and released in 1951. It contains a scene that depicts how Jacob Marley and Scrooge take over the business. Men loudly protest at their proposal of taking 51% of the shares. Scrooge and Marley look at each other and sit back. They’ve got these men by the tender parts, and they know it. The scene is brilliant.
