Sure, I built Boost before and it was somewhat painful and took a long
time on a reasonably well-specced PC (as of 2007 anyway). I was
thinking of the OP's offer to work in similar functionality without
Boost (or even iostream) - if this could be done without adding
dependencies and was optional, then what's the problem?

Is your objection just a knee-jerk response or have you actually
considered that offer?
