old homeplace farm CSA

What is a CSA?

CSA is an acronym for Community Supported Agriculture. This means that the customer (aka community) supports the farm by paying a set amount of money, and trusts the farmer to provide a "share" of the farm to them. A farm share is a unique collaboration between the farmer and community members. Members purchase a “farm share” in return for a portion of the harvest throughout the season. The customer trusts the farmer to curate a subscription box each week with the vegetables currently available for harvest. The farmer harvests and provide a bountiful supply of produce to each member once a week throughout the CSA season.

is a csa farm share the right fit for you?

The best way to share in our farm’s bounty and eat through the season with us is to join our CSA program. But, we know that committing to a CSA share can be daunting and and that a CSA is not the best fit for everyone. Before you join our CSA, please ask yourself these 5 questions.

The csa might be for you if…

  • You are interested in purchasing locally grown, fresh produce, but you can't remember to (or don't want to) order online every week

  • You want to farmer Maggie to curate a veggie package for you every week because you love trying new things and cooking with with the seasons

  • You want to support our farm by committing upfront to purchase produce for the summer. Your commitment helps us with farm planning, and helps make it possible for us to have a continuous supply of fresh produce. You have the option pre-pay in advance for the entire amount of summer produce as a commitment to financially support the farm. Or, you can sign up with a down payment (purchase price of one week of the CSA) and then the online store will automatically bill you each week throughout the summer CSA period so you don't have to worry about paying at pick up each week.

The old homeplace farm fall 2025 csa works like this:

The Summer Season (20 week) share will run from the week of May 12th through the week of September 23rd.

  • Each "share" (veggie package) will contain 5-10 different vegetables each week. The types of crops included will change throughout the season as different crops are ready for harvest. This is one of the things that makes buying locally exciting! CSA customers will get to experience the changing of the season along with their farmer. Larger share sizes will receive greater volume, and a some different veggies than the smaller share sizes.

  • Customers will pick up their shares at our current designated delivery points, or can have veggie packages delivered to their home (if they live within 5 miles of pick up locations). Click HERE to see our pick up locations. Please email or text Maggie (maggie@oldhomeplacefarm.com/606-391-8446) if you have questions about whether your address is within our delivery range.

What size veggie share is right for you?

The size of the CSA that is appropriate for your family really depends on your specific cooking and eating habits! Over the last few years of paying attention to our CSA members, we suggest the following:

    • The small veggie share is wonderful for folks who live alone and cook often, or those who live with another person and cook a few days per week. We also see larger families choosing the small size option if only the adults in the family are eating the veggies, if the family only cooks a few meals per week, or if the family wants more flexibility to purchase other vegetables for specific recipes from the grocery store or farmers market. Vegetable portions included in this share size are created with 1-2 adults in mind. (For example- the amount of green beans included will be based upon 2 adults eating one meal with green beans). If you are new to CSA with a small household or do not cook a lot of veggies already, we recommend that you start with this size.

    • The medium veggie share is wonderful for folks who live with one other person or a family, depending on how often you cook and eat veggies. We (Farmers Will and Maggie) eat a medium size CSA each week. We cook and eat almost all of our meals at home. To use the entire CSA each week it does take meal planning for our two person household. We suggest the medium CSA for households of two people that eat a lot of veggies and cook at home most days, or for larger families where everyone enjoys veggies. Vegetable portions included in this share size are created with 2-4 adults in mind. (For example- the amount of green beans included will be based upon 4 adults eating one meal with green beans. or 2 adults eating two meals with green beans).

    • The large veggie share is good for larger families that cook and eat lots of veggies. We do have some 2 person households that receive a large share. These households eat almost exclusively vegetables from our farm and also freeze or otherwise preserve portions of the CSA each week for use during the winter months. Vegetable portions included in this share size are created with 4 adults in mind. The large share will also usually include some special veggie options that there weren’t enough of to include in all of the shares. We suggest the large CSA share for 2 person households who want to preserve veggies each week, or for larger households. If you are new to CSA we DO NOT recommend a large share, unless you cook almost all of your meals at home and have at least 4 people in your household. If you are an experienced CSA member looking for more veggies than the medium share provides, then go for it!

What is included in a VEggie share?

To see pictures of our 2023 Vegetable shares, please click HERE. Click on each picture to see the week info, size of the share, and a list of what is included each week.

The 2025 CSA will not be exactly the same as the 2023 offerings because we are always trying to improve our veggie offerings! But, looking through the 2023 shares will give you a good idea of what to expect. For instance, you will not see sweet corn in the pictures (Due to space constraints, we do not grow Sweet Corn).

*Note for 2025 - shares will not include strawberries in 2025 due to a major disease outbreak in strawberry plant nurseries during 2024. The farm growing the strawberry transplants we had anticipated planting in fall 2024 was affected by this disease outbreak, and we were not able to obtain any disease free planting stock for this season. But, we will grow other veggies and plan for strawberries again in 2026. This is a great example of why farming is so challenging-many things are out of our control as a farm. Having CSA members support us each year, even when we won’t have strawberries, is extremely important for the longevity of our farm.
