Have you heard of the term, Hostile Architecture? It’s an an urban-design strategy that uses elements of the built environment to purposefully guide behavior. An example is public parks with high fences or benches and sills with spikes to deter skateboarders. I listened to a podcast about this design style back in 2019 and I became obsessed with it, or should I say the opposite of hostile. I became infatuated with the opportunity to take basic, functional and sometimes ugly things found in our environments and ways to make them pretty. There was a series of installations, many happening in NYC during the pandemic of artists and florist taking often times piles of trash or trash cans and turning them into beautiful floral art installations.
