1.7K views · 468 reactions | Winter Sowing is hard to mess up, but here is what I do and my top tips: 1. If you don’t have seeds that need cold stratification; you don’t actually have to do this in winter. 2. Collect jugs and prep: pull off labels, drill holes (don’t like power tools? Check out my red solo cup reel for the method I usually use) and cut in half almost all the way— leave yourself a little hinge. 2. Moisten soil — potting soil make it yourself or buy it, but make sure it’s nice a damp 3. Try and only plant 4-5 seeds in each container for a 2L, 6-8 for a gallon. (Separating seedlings will suck less later) 4. Cover to the depth on the seed packet with a fluffy soil… I used seed starting mix— you can sift potting mix… but make sure it’s moistened too. 5. Label with a weather proof, sun proof marker!! I like garden line markers 6. Set in a sunny spot and ignore — your little greenhouses will do the rest of the work. (Note: you may need to water if you get a freakishly dry and hot week). Are you trying winter sowing this year? What are you growing? #wintersowing #wintersowingseeds #wintersowingmethod #seedstarting #seedstartingtips #seedstartingsaturday #backyardgarden #diy #diygreenhouse #diygarden | Michelle 🌱 GardensandChickens🐓 Gardener | plant nerd

3.3K views · 1.5K reactions | Seed starting season is upon us (depending on where you live in the country 🎉) Here are three tips that I learned over time, but wish I knew sooner. Also, yes, lights are REQUIRED for seed starting. Those lights don’t need to be marketed as grow lights; any full spectrum light source works, but window sills with aluminum foil contraptions have only led me to grow lanky seedlings (trust me, I tried) Heat pads are not “required” per say…but they really help speed up germination, which makes the whole process way more fun. Still need seeds? My favorite seed source is @pinetree_garden_seeds — great germination at an amazing price point 👌. Code: “SpringTips15” saves you an additional 15% off 🌱 happy gardening 💫 #gardenmagic #seedstarting #seedstartingtips #gardentips #newgardenertips #growyourown | Michelle 🌱 GardensandChickens🐓 Gardener | plant nerd

1.9K views · 295 reactions | Sowing sweet peas🌸 I grow sweetpeas in pots up some netting that I hang on the patio fence, and the sweetpeas grow and cover the fence. This is the essence of June for me, the gorgeous scent of the sweetpeas. I also growing them up obelisks in the borders, and if you saw my stories a few days ago I’ve got another structure in the garden I’m going to attempt to cover in sweet peas this year 😄 I sowed some back in late October and doing the second batch now in January. The autumn sown ones will start flowering mid/end of May but the January ones won’t be far behind, they catch up quickly. You can start them off inside but don’t let them remain inside once they sprout, move them out to your greenhouse/coldframe etc. Sweetpeas are very hardy and can tolerate cold temperatures. I’ll start planting them out later in March. I’m going to do another post on the pros & cons of growing them in pots! Are you growing sweetpeas? #sweetpeas #growingsweetpeas #juneflowers #summerflowers #growingfromseed #lovesweetpeas #gardening #cottagegarden #gardeningtips #gardeninspiration | Alexandra Oakley 🌸 My Hampshire Garden

Which is why we like to make our own seed starting mix. 😁 We've nailed down the appropriate ratio of these wonderful ingredients and love that 45% of it comes right from our homestead. If only we could grow coconut trees 🤣 Let's take a closer look at the ingredients 👇 Coco Coir: 🥥 This material is excellent! It has a high water holding capacity (which means the roots don't dry out as quickly), the long fibrous structure allows for aeration of the roots- preventing diseases and optimizes growth, and is a more sustainable product (unlike peat moss)- as it is a by product of harvesting coconuts. It just lacks nutrients, which is why we add 45% of our compost. Compost: 🪱 Our compost is packed full of nutrients! Bone, blood, fish, plant, manure, worms, everything! We allow our compost to sit for 6mo-1yr and sift it finely for our seed starting process. We never fertilize our plants with anything other than our compost. Vermiculite:🪨 We add just a pinch of this to help water retention and aeration. It also can absorb nutrients and make them available to the plant when they're needed. So cool! What do you use to start your seeds?? 🤔 #homestead #homesteading #pnwhomestead #seedstarting #organicgardening #seedstartingmix #garden #growyourownfood #cococoir #compost #vermiculite | Drake & Emily ~ Holistic Homesteading
