POETS AND MUSIC

Music grabs your heart and stirs your soul as many quotes have described. These poets and bards have put into words our feeling and emotions to the world we live in. We mere mortals can only thank them for "that" song that stirs our soul.

This song is about a recluse locking himself away from the world. When he says, "I am a rock, I am an island," he means away from everything and everyone. It's far from autobiographical, as Paul Simon was doing his best to write a hit song with this effort, and didn't write it for himself. The use of the word "rock" is interesting in that Simon considered himself a folk singer, and didn't associate himself with rock music.

Rob Parissi grabbed a pen and order pad and wrote the song in about 5 minutes. The lyrics describes the predicament of a hard rock band adjusting to the disco era

the song for pretty woman, won't you
Oh, Pretty Woman" or simply "Pretty Woman" is a song recorded by Roy Orbison, written by Orbison and Bill Dees. It was released as a single in 1964 and spent 3 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The title was inspired by Orbison's wife, Claudette, interrupting a conversation to announce she was going out. When Orbison asked if she had enough cash, his co-writer Bill Dees interjected, "A pretty woman never needs any money." In 1999, the song was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
