The formal name of the site is Balnuaran of Clava, and the term ‘Clava Cairns’ actually refers to a type of funerary complex built in the Bronze Age that’s unique to the Moray Firth and Inverness region. There are about fifty such sites, but this is by far the most famous and best preserved. The defining features of clava cairns include a mixture of passage graves, burial cairns, kerb cairns and standing stones. Derek Mccrimmon on Instagram: "THE DEVIL’S PULPIT 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Recently took a trip to The Devil’s Pulpit and managed to get the whole place to myself for around an hour 😍 this place is so magical and looks even better with the drone 🤤 The real name of the gorge is Finnich Glen, although, I much prefer the name ‘The Devil’s Pulpit’. The name originated from the mushroom-shaped rock that pokes above the rushing stream. Legend says that the rock is where the Devil stood to address his followers, all the while the blood-red water splashed around his feet. There are also tales of Druids holding secret meetings here hidden from sight within the shadows of the gorge’s looming walls, and others tell stories of witches using the rock as a place to cast spells away from prying eyes.
