Silence feels like classroom management. Unfortunately, many students go entire days without speaking, which is not going to help them socially or academically. If we make the classroom content comprehensible - easier to understand - they will WANT to talk about it! An ideal classroom for students would be 60% student talk and 40% teacher talk. So how do we get close to that without chaos taking over? And when? I know conversation, discourse, and discussion take time. I also know that when you structure it well, that time saves you so much time later with re-teaching and repeating.
