Building 3D Structures
Technology/Engineering. Children create 3D shapes with craft sticks using play-dough to put them together. While building their structures, they understand that the foundation must be solid in order to build it. Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: Technology & Engineering 23. Explore and describe a wide variety of natural and man-made materials through sensory experiences.
How Plants Grow
Life Science. Children investigate how a green onion, an onion, and a beet grow in water. They observe their roots, stems, and leaves using magnifying glasses and draw pictures in their journals. The Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: Life Sciences 10. Observe and identify the characteristics and need of living things: humans, animals, and plants.
Balloon Rockets Activity
Earth/Space Science. Children blow the air through to a balloon using the air pump. They say, 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 blast off and then let it go. Children observe the air move objects. Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: Earth and Space Sciences 6. Explore discuss what air is or does; air takes up space inside bubbles and beach balls; air can move things; air can support things such as parachutes and kites.
Marshmallow Catapult
Physical Science. Children play by observing how far the marshmallow is blown away, depending on the force pulled by the rubber band. The Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: The Physical Sciences 21. Explore and describe various actions that can change an object's motion such as pulling, pushing, twisting, rolling, and throwing.
How To Make Butter
Life Science. Butter is created from cream. Children pour the cream in a jar and shake it until the cream is firm. They read the book "Bread and Butter for You and Me" and will see how to make butter in the story. The Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: Living Things & Their Environment 15. Use their senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste to explore their environment using sensory vocabulary.
Explore Science with Ramps
Physical Science. I set two equal angle ramps, a small car, a large car, a light car and a heavy car. Children explore how the toy cars move fast due to force, gravity, size or weight. They can predict which cars will go fast or slow. The Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: The Physical Sciences 21. Explore and describe various actions that can change an object's motion such as pulling, pushing, twisting, rolling, and throwing.
Building a Lego Maze
Technology/Engineering. Children create a Lego Maze and roll a pom pom using a minifigure. They can develop their thinking skills through building it in many different ways, and improve their social skills through collaboration with peers. Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: Technology & Engineering 23. Explore and describe a wide variety of natural and man-made materials through sensory experiences.
Toilet Paper Tube Marble Run
Technology/Engineering. Children place toilet paper tubes on the wall using tape. Children will see through trial and error that the ends of the tubes must be connected together. This experiment gives children a sense of fun and accomplishment. Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: Technology & Engineering 23. Explore and describe a wide variety of natural and man-made materials through sensory experiences.
Rocks and Soil
Earth/Space Science. Rocks are everywhere. Children go outside to explore dirt and collect rocks. They dig and scoop dirt with plastic scoops, and shift it using sifters. They can see that soil is made up of tiny, little rocks. The Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: Earth and Space Sciences 5. Compare and contrast natural materials such as water, rocks, soil, and living organisms using descriptive language.
Ice Block Investigation
Physical Science. Children investigate how they can take cars out from the ice block. They can melt the ice block using tools, such as droppers, squeeze or squirt bottles filled with warm water. The Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences: The Physical Sciences 19. Explore, describe, and compare the properties of liquids and solids found in children's daily environment.
