Over time the Cat in the Hat became more than a recurring character for Dr. Seuss, it also morphed into his alter ego, surfacing repeatedly in his surrealist paintings. And although Ted did enjoy the solitude of working alone in his studio, he still titled this piece “Lonely,” suspending his Cat in a tranquil environment, not unlike La Jolla, California, which was a sleepy little coastal town when he settled there in 1948.
