International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) consists of symbols for phonemes, which are the smallest units of SOUND. The focus is on sounds and not letters. In American English K-12 instruction, teachers use the informal names "short" and "long" to describe vowels. These are not linguistic terms, and they are not correct. The difference between /oʊ/ (so-called "long o") as in "boat" and /ɒ/ (so-called “short o”) as in "hot" is a difference in quality and not in length of time that you say them.
