Hagan Osborne FILMINK (Australia) ...hard-hitting and confronting... Rated: 15/20 Apr 1, 2021 Full Review Guillem Martinez Oya Cinematismo A cosmic travel to the adulthood. A catharsis about what does really mean be an adult nowadays. Our internal and external fights to survive. A masterpiece [full review in Spanish] Rated: 3.75/5 Jun 15, 2020 Full Review André Hereford Metro Weekly (Washington, DC) The gay chat room thriller Nevrland underdelivers on its dark, timely premise of strangers connecting online. Rated: 2/5 Mar 27, 2020 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall [Gregor] Schmidinger channels this material with intent: this young man isn't wallowing in his mental turmoil, he's working a way through it. Which makes the film exhilarating. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 22, 2019 Full Review Lewis Knight Daily Mirror (UK) This Austrian drama is not short of triggering and uncomfortable moments, but it will certainly last long in the memory. Logan D A young man who struggles with anxiety and expressing his sexuality meets a stranger in an online chat room. First time director Schmidinger (who also wrote the script) impresses with violent imagery filtered thru the sexuality of Jakob, as played by Frühwirth. Frühwirth plays Jakob as quiet and introspective. This film is experimental and memorable. It will settle inside you and froth. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review PridePosterStudios You know when you get to the end of a film and think: “But nothing’s happened?” Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Larry L I love when competent directors go out on limbs and give us something experimental, visually dazzling, and so thought-provoking that it stays in your mind for days. "Nevrland" accomplishes all of this, highlighted by the bravura performances of Simon Frühwirth and Paul Forman. This film is from Austria, a small country which doesn't produce a lot of films, but when it does, they are generally far ahead of anything coming from Hollywood (just look at the Austrian entries for the Oscars this year and last: "Corsage" and Große Freiheit"). Yes: the film is in both German and English and, unless you are bi- or multilingual, you will need subtitles. Get used to it as America continues to spill out drivel like "Knock at the Cabin", "The Whale" (almost unwatchable), and "Everything Everywhere" (totally unwatchable - I have tried twice and can't get past 30 minutes).
