Indication >stimulates rhythmic contractions of the uterus, increases the frequency of existing contractions, and raises the tone of uterine musculature. Contraindication Hypersensitivity to drug. Drug name Methylergonovine maleate Rx: Methergine CLASSIFICATION: Oxytocic drug ACTION: Synthetic drug related to ergonovine. Acts directly on the uterine smooth muscle to stimulate the rate, tone, and amplitude of uterine contractions.
DRUG STUDY Indication Contraindication >Management and prevention of postpartum and postabortal hemorrhage by producing firm uterine contractions and decreasing bleeding, >During second stage of labor following delivery of the anterior shoulder, but only under full obstetric supervision. Pregnancy, toxemia, hypertension. Ergot hypersensitivity.
Dosage and route Injection: 0.2 mg/mL Tablets: 0.2 mg. 0.2 mg 3-4 times per day in the puerperium for a maximum of 1 week.
