    DRUG STUDY Drug name Oxytocin CLASSIFICATION: Oxytocic drug Action: Acts on smooth muscle of the uterus to stimulate contractions; response depends on the uterine threshold of excitability. Indication >stimulates rhythmic contractions of the uterus, increases the frequency of existing contractions, and raises the tone of uterine musculature. Contraindication Hypersensitivity to drug. Significant cephalopelvic disproportion; unfavorable fetal positions or presentations that are undeliverable without conversion prior to delivery. Dosage and route 10 units/mL. Intravenous infusion

    DRUG STUDY Drug name Ferrous Sulfate (FeSO4) CLASSIFICATION: Antianemic, Iron ACTION: Males: 12-20mg Females: 8-15mg Iron is absorbed from the duodenum and upper jejunum by an active mechanism through the mucosal cells where it combines with the protein transferrin. Indication >Prophylaxis and treatment of iron deficiency and irondeficiency anemias. >Dietary supplement for iron. Optimum therapeutic responses are usually noted within 2-4 weeks. Contraindication Hemosiderosis, hemochromatosis, peptic ulcer, regional enteritis, and ulcerative colitis. Hemolytic anemia, pyridoxineresponsive anemia, and cirrhosis of the liver. Use in those with normal iron balance. Dosage and route 200mg/day PO

    Drug name Methylergonovine maleate Rx: Methergine CLASSIFICATION: Oxytocic drug ACTION: Synthetic drug related to ergonovine. Acts directly on the uterine smooth muscle to stimulate the rate, tone, and amplitude of uterine contractions.

    DRUG STUDY Indication Contraindication >Management and prevention of postpartum and postabortal hemorrhage by producing firm uterine contractions and decreasing bleeding, >During second stage of labor following delivery of the anterior shoulder, but only under full obstetric supervision. Pregnancy, toxemia, hypertension. Ergot hypersensitivity.

    Dosage and route Injection: 0.2 mg/mL Tablets: 0.2 mg. 0.2 mg 3-4 times per day in the puerperium for a maximum of 1 week.
