Viva Malala! was composed in honor of Malala Yousufzai, a 14-year-old advocate of education for girls in the Swat Valley of Pakistan where she was brutally injured by the Taliban. She now convalesces in a London hospital.
notes on the lyrics: Swat Valley: a verdant area of Pakistan about 250 kilometers from Islamabad China Market: a street market where it has been forbidden for women to shop. Men must shop for them. notes on the performance: The piece should be sung with a beat, almost in a gospel style. The "percussion" part is optional but could be performed by any combination of the singers. The idea is a simple "boom-chick" effect: the "boom" could be a stamping of feet and the "chick" a clapping hands.
