Paragraph Writing Tips

A paragraph is the smallest unit of prose composition. It consists of a group of closely related sentences. Paragraph writing tips A paragraph should be neither too short nor too long. Avoid writing excessively long paragraphs that run into several pages. Also avoid the practice of writing paragraphs consisting of a single sentence. Unity of thought Discuss only one central idea in each paragraph. The sentences in a paragraph should be closely related in meaning so that each sentence would look like a natural continuation of the previous sentence. To achieve this effect, you need to develop your ideas in a logical manner. Continuity of thought Make good use of conjunctions and coherence words that will help achieve the continuity of thought. For instance, if rightly used the conjunctions hence, so, therefore, and, then, but and or will connect sentences and make the paragraph a well-knit whole. To present contrasting ideas and alternatives use expressions like on the other hand, nevertheless, however, on the contrary etc. The first sentence should introduce the central idea of the paragraph. Do not use the same kind of sentence patterns throughout the paragraph. Variation in the length and style of sentences will impress the readers and make the paragraph more interesting. Types of paragraphs There are very many kinds of paragraphs. Some of the most common among them are as follows: Descriptive paragraph

In a descriptive paragraph we describe an object such as a person, thing or a scene. The purpose of a descriptive paragraph is to give a vivid picture of the object. Avoid unnecessary details. Narrative In a narrative paragraph we narrate an incident. You must give a clear and cogent account of the whole incident. And if the occasion demands you may also want to make your account full of suspense. A paragraph of definition A paragraph of definition defines things ? both abstract and concrete. Be precise and make accurate use of words. The definition must be objective, scientific and dispassionate. A paragraph of differences In a paragraph of differences you contrast two things and state the differences in an explicit manner. Make good use of coherence words such as but, whereas, on the other hand and on the contrary.
