Executive Summary

There is growing competition between brokerage firms in post reform India. For investor it is always difficult to decide which brokerage firm to choose.

Page | 4

Research was carried out to find which brokerage house people prefer and to figure out what people prefer while investing in stock market. This research suggest that people are reluctant while investing in stock and commodity market due to lack of knowledge. Main purpose of investment is returns and liquidity, commodity market is less preferred by investors due to lack of awareness. The major findings of this study are that people are interested to invest in stock market but they lack knowledge. Through this research I came to know what are positive and strong points of the BMA wealth creators.

Indian stock Market Overview The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) are the two primary exchanges in India. In addition, there are 22 Regional Stock Exchanges. However, the BSE and NSE have established themselves as the two leading exchanges and account for about 80% of the equity volume traded in India. The NSE and BSE are equal in size in terms of daily traded volume. The average daily turnover at the exchanges has increased from Rs851crore in 1997-98 to Rs1284crore in 1998-99 and further to Rs2273crore in 1999-2000. NSE has around 1500 shares listed with the total market capitalization of around Rs9, 21,500crore. The BSE has over 6000 stocks listed and has a market capitalization of around Rs9, 68,000crore. Most key stocks are traded on both the exchanges and hence the investor could buy on either of the exchanges. Both exchanges have a different settlement cycle, which allows investors to shift their position on the bourses. The primary index of BSE in BSE Sensex comprises 30 stocks. NSE has the S&P NSE 50 Index (Nifty), which consists of fifty stocks. The BSE Sensex is the older and most widely followed index. Both these indices are calculated on the basis of market capitalization and contain the heavily traded shares from key sectors. The markets are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Both the exchanges have switched over from the open outcry trading system to a fully automated computerized mode of trading known as BOLT (BSE On Line Trading) and NEAT (National Exchange Automated Trading) system. It facilitates more efficient processing, automatic order matching, faster execution of trades and transparency. The scrip traded on the BSE has been classified into A, B1, B2, C, F, and Z groups. The A group shares represent those, which are in the carry forward system (Badla). The F group represents the dept market (fixed income securities) segment. The Z group scrip is the blacklisted companies. The C group covers the odd lot securities in A, B1, & B2 groups and Rights renunciations. The key regulator governing Stock Exchanges, Brokers, Depositories, Depository participants, Mutual Funds, FIIs and other participants in Indian secondary and primary market is the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Limited.

HISTORY

The only stock exchanges operating in the 19th century were those of Bombay set up in 1875 Ahemadabad set up was in 1894. These were organized as voluntary non-profit making organization of brokers to regulate and protect their interests. Before the control on securities trading became a central subject under the constitution in 1950, it was a state subject and the Bombay securities contract (CONTROL) Act of 1952 used to regulate trading in securities. Under this Act these stock exchanges were regulated; the Bombay stock exchange in 1927 and the Ahemadabad stock exchange in 1937. During the war boom, a number of stock exchanges were organized in Bombay, Ahemadabad and other centers, but they were not recognized. Soon after it became a central subject, central legislation was proposed and a committee headed by A.D. Gorwala went into the bill for securities regulation. On the basis of committees recommendations and public discussions the securities contracts (regulations) Act became law in 1956.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Page | 14

According to Green and Tall A research design is the specification of the methods and procedures for acquiring the information needed. It is the overall operational pattern or framework of the project that stipulates which information is to be collected, from where it is to be collected and by what procedures This research process based on primary data analysis and secondary data analysis will be clearly defined to meet the objectives of the study.

I chose the primary sources to get the data. A questionnaire was designed in accordance with our mentor in Ketchup. I chose a sample of about 30 corporate customers

I collected some data from the secondary sources like published Company documents, internet etc. Research Design A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collections and analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in procedures. It is a descriptive cross sectional design .It is the conceptual structure with in which research is conducted; it constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement and analysis of data. It is needed because it facilitates the smooth sailing of the various research operations, thereby making research as efficient as possible yielding maximal information with minimal expenditure of effort, time and money. In the preliminary stage, my research stage constituted of exploratory study by which it is clear that the existence of the problem is obvious .So, I can directly head for the conclusive research. Sampling Plan

Page | 15

Sampling plan is a distinct phase of research process. In this stage I have to determine who is to be sampled, how large should be the needed sample and how sampling unit is to be selected. Population In my research, I have defined my population as a complete set of customers of Sagar City. Sample Survey As compared to census study, a sample study has been conducted by us because of: Wide range of population, it was impossible to cover the whole population Time and money constraints. Sample Unit In this survey I took the list of customers from the dealers of Ketchup Sampling Technique Sampling technique implies the method of choosing the sample items, the two methods of selecting sample are: Probability method. Non-probability method. Probability method is those in which every item of the universe has an equal chance of the inclusion in the sample. Non-probability methods are those that do not provide every item in the universe with known cause of being included in the sample. The selection process is partially subjective. For my study, I employed the Non-probability sampling technique, in which I got the data of the customers from the dealer of Ketchup. Instrument of collection of data I have used one set of questionnaire to collect data from the customers. This questionnaire is structured and highly ordered. This includes both close ended and
Page | 16

open ended questions. The close ended questions included both dichotomous and multiple choice questions.

MARKET ANALYSIS
1. STOCK MARKET
The Stock Market is either a private or public market where stock shares of the companies are sold or traded to potential investors A stock share, a legal document from the company or simply referred as 'stock certificates', will entitleyou to be a co-owner of that company. It is considered as a very important sector in the market economy. Page | 17

One of the highlighted features in investing in Stock Market is the concept of unlimited liability. The Stock Market indeed offers a profound opportunity to be a shareholder for certain companies which in return escalates your investments provided you have opted for a reputable income generating companies. In caseyou dont know some companies allow you to buy part of the company and these pieces of the companyare called shares of stock. The stock market takes place on various stock exchanges the two larges exchanges are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System (NASDAQ). The stock market is nothing new though, in fact in 1602 Dutch East India Company listed the first share of stock on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. The term stock market is used for the overall stocks sold and bought at stock exchanges. A group of organizations can constitute a stock exchange to perform share dealings. For example, USA, NASDAQ and NYSE are stock exchanges. The price of a stock depends on the demand and supply of that particular stock. In stock markets, the share dealing is done by a middleman. The person is known as a share broker. The seller and buyer mutuallydecide the price of the trade.

2. SENSEX

The Sensex is an "index". An index is basically an indicator. It gives you a general idea about whether most of the stocks have gone up or most of the stocks have gone down.

Bombay Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in Asia with a rich heritage, now spanning three centuries in its 133 years of existence. What is now popularly known as BSE was established as "The Native Share & Stock Brokers' Association" in 1875. BSE is the first stock exchange in the country which obtained permanent recognition (in 1956) from the Government of India under the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act 1956. BSE's pivotal and pre-eminent role in the development of the Indian capital market is widely recognized. It migrated from the open outcry system to an online screen-based order driven trading system in 1995. Earlier an Association Of Persons (AOP), BSE is now a corporatised and demutualised entity incorporated under the provisions of the Companies Act, 1956, pursuant to the BSE (Corporatisation and Demutualisation) Scheme, 2005 notified by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). With demutualisation, BSE has two of world's best exchanges, Deutsche Brse and Singapore Exchange, as its strategic partners. Over the past 133 years, BSE has facilitated the growth of the Indian corporate sector by providing it with an efficient access to resources. There is perhaps no major corporate in India which has not sourced BSE's services in raising resources from the capital market. Today, BSE is the world's number 1 exchange in terms of the number of listed companies and the world's 5th in transaction numbers. The market capitalization as on December 31, 2007 stood at USD 1.79 trillion . An investor can choose from more than 4,700 listed companies, which for easy reference, are classified into A, B, S, T and Z groups. The BSE Index, SENSEX, is India's first stock market index that enjoys an iconic stature , and is tracked worldwide. It is an index of 30 stocks representing 12 major sectors. The SENSEX is constructed on a 'free-float' methodology, and is sensitive to market sentiments and market realities. Apart from the SENSEX, BSE offers 21 indices, including 12 sectoral indices. BSE has entered into an index cooperation agreement with Deutsche Brse. This agreement has made SENSEX and other BSE indices available to investors in Europe and America. Moreover, Barclays Global Investors Page | 19

(BGI), the global leader in ETFs through its iShares brand, has created the 'iShares BSE SENSEX India Tracker' which tracks the SENSEX. The ETF enables investors in Hong Kong to take an exposure to the Indian equity market. The first Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) on SENSEX, called "SPIcE" is listed on BSE. It brings to the investors a trading tool that can be easily used for the purposes of investment, trading, hedging and arbitrage. SPIcE allows small investors to take a longterm view of the market. BSE provides an efficient and transparent market for trading in equity, debt instruments and derivatives. It has a nation-wide reach with a presence in more than 359 cities and towns of India. BSE has always been at par with the international standards. The systems and processes are designed to safeguard market integrity and enhance transparency in operations. BSE is the first exchange in India and the second in the world to obtain an ISO 9001:2000 certification. It is also the first exchange in the country and second in the world to receive Information Security Management System Standard BS 7799-2-2002 certification for its BSE On-line Trading System (BOLT). BSE continues to innovate. In recent times, it has become the first national level stock exchange to launch its website in Gujarati and Hindi to reach out to a larger number of investors. It has successfully launched a reporting platform for corporate bonds in India christened the ICDM or Indian Corporate Debt Market and a unique ticker-cum-screen aptly named 'BSE Broadcast' which enables information dissemination to the common man on the street. In 2006, BSE launched the Directors Database and ICERS (Indian Corporate Electronic Reporting System) to facilitate information flow and increase transparency in the Indian capital market. While the Directors Database provides a single-point access to information on the boards of directors of listed companies, the ICERS facilitates the corporates in sharing with BSE their corporate announcements. BSE also has a wide range of services to empower investors and facilitate smooth transactions: Page | 20

Investor Services: The Department of Investor Services redresses grievances of investors. BSE was the first exchange in the country to provide an amount of Rs.1 million towards the investor protection fund; it is an amount higher than that of any exchange in the country. BSE launched a nationwide investor awareness programme- 'Safe Investing in the Stock Market' under which 264 programmes were held in more than 200 cities. The BSE On-line Trading (BOLT): BSE On-line Trading (BOLT) facilitates online screen based trading in securities. This initiative enables investors anywhere in the world to trade on the BSE platform. Surveillance: BSE's On-Line Surveillance System (BOSS) monitors on a realtime basis the price movements, volume positions and members' positions and real-time measurement of default risk, market reconstruction and generation of cross market alerts. The BSE SENSEX is not only scientifically designed but also based on globally accepted construction and review methodology. First compiled in 1986, SENSEX is a basket of 30 constituent stocks representing a sample of large, liquid and representative companies. The base year of SENSEX is 1978-79 and the base value is 100.
