Procedure

A speculum is inserted into the vagina A catheter is then inserted into the cervix Contrast material is injected into the uterine cavity through the catheter Fluoroscopic images are then taken

Uses of Hysterosaplingography

Most commonly used to evaluate patients with difficulty becoming pregnant or with frequent miscarriages Used to evaluate uterine abnormalities

Used to evaluate tubal patency

Congenital uterine anomalies Fibroids or tumor masses Adhesions

Following tubal ligation reversal procedure Following pelvic inflammatory disease

Risks and Benefits

Minimally invasive procedure with rare complications Can provide valuable information regarding infertility or problems carrying a fetus to term Minimal exposure to radiation

Effective radiation dose ~ 1 mSv (comparable to average amount of background radiation over 4 mo)

Should not be performed if patient is pregnant at the time of the procedure
