Geography

About the course


Geography is the study of the earths places, societies, environments and landscapes. This course explicitly engages with the relationship between human populations over space and time and the relationship they have with their physical environment on a variety of scales, from the local to the global. The AS course aims to introduce you to the importance and practicalities of eldwork, and includes a 3-days visit to Cranedale Field Study Centre near Malton, North Yorkshire. You will also cover topics such as population change. At A2 you will build upon your knowledge of eldwork and investigative skills, as well as exploring the topics of plate tectonics and world cities.

How will I be assessed?


All AS and A2 units are assessed by external examination, in the summer term.

AS: Unit 1 - River, Flood and Management / Population Change / Cold Environments / Health Issues Unit 2 - Geographical Skills A2: Unit 3 - Plate Tectonics / Contemporary Conicts / World Cities Unit 4 - Geography Fieldwork Investigation

Additional minimum entry requirements:


C in GCSE Geography and C in GCSE English at Higher Tier or English Language.

Is this course for me?


To be successful in your study of A Level Geography you need to have good communication and written skills, be able to work as part of a team, and demonstrate problem-solving and numeracy skills.

Where can it take me?


The A Level Geography course provides a suitable foundation for the study of Geography or related courses in higher education. Furthermore, it is suitable for those wishing to pursue geography-based careers and also careers in Business and the Social Sciences. Previous students have gone on to study Geography and its related courses at university, such as Planning, Environmental Science and Earth Science. 20
