    Ernst of Schaumburg was the first Count of Schaumburg and Holstein-Pinneberg to be granted the title of Prince in 1619. However, he died in 1622 without an heir. Schaumburg had been a Lutheran region since Ernst's grandfather converted to Martin Luther's teachings. After Ernst's death, control of parts of Schaumburg passed to both a Catholic Count and later a Calvinist Count. Prince Ernst had the Stadthagen Mausoleum built for his family, which is now considered a monument of European cultural significance.
