Your written concert critique is due 2 weeks after seeing your concert. Turning your paper in after 2 weeks will result in up to a 10 point reduction. Requirements: 1. Any live dance performance that the student can watch, as long as 45 minutes of the concert that you watch is 8th grade age or older. This is an opportunity for you to be inspired by others your age or older and learn from from. If you are performing in the concert, you must be able to sit and watch at least 45 minutes of it as an audience member. If these parameters concern your parents, they are welcome to come talk to Mrs. McNeil to accommodate. 2. The length of the report is to be 2 pages, typed, double spaced using 12 point font, Times New Roman. If you do not have a computer or printed and need to write the critique, it must be done in blue or black ink and be 3 pages in length, single-spaced. Points will be deducted for additional empty space created to make it the correct length. 3. Please staple the program or ticket stub to the report. 4. The title page will include your name, period, date turned in, and the title of the concert. Your report should begin at the top of the next page. 5. Use the note-taking sheet to help you write your paper. You must answer every question in your paper to receive full points:
Section 1: Introduction Tell me about this performance. What is the style of dance? Why did you choose this concert over others? When did you go to this concert? Who performed in the concert? What information do you find in the program? What does the title suggest? Is there a story, or does a theme or idea come to mind? What did you suspect to see before actually viewing the movement? Describe the production in general. What kind of lighting was used? Describe the costumes that were used. How did that affect the performance?
Section 2: Details of the Concert For each question, find something in the concert that stood out to you to answer each question: Can you determine the overall structure of the performance? How many dancers are there? Do you see solos, duets or group sections? Do sections repeat or change slightly? How are the dancers using their bodies? Is the movement small and gestural or is it expansive and full-bodied? Do you recognize particular step, phrases or motifs that repeat during the piece? How does the choreography use the space? Do you see lines, circles, diagonals or other formations? Does a particular area of the state seem important? What qualities do you see in the movement? Bold, gentle, awkward, fluid, focused, chaotic, relaxed or hurried? What do the qualities of movement remind you of? How are the dancers relating to each other and their stage environment? Are they dancing together, apart, do they touch and how? Where do they face? Do they use props? What stood out to you? Which dances did you like and why? Were there performers that caught your eye? What made them stand out? Would you recommend this performance to others? Write down a few things that inspired you. Be sure to include 3 things you would like to work on in class based on the things you watched in the concert.
