Introduction
This book is designed to give students practice reading various phonetic patterns within the context of stories. Look at the table of contents to see which new patterns are practiced in each story. Students should practice reading words and sentences with these patterns before attempting to read each story, using the Phonetic Words and Phonetic Sentences booklets, available at www.soundcityreading.com. Alternately, the teacher can read each story aloud first, then make a list on the board showing the new phonics patterns introduced in the story and the words from the story that contain these patterns. The students can then study these words and other words with the same patterns, and then return to the story to read it themselves. Each page in this book is printed twice, first using color-coded print in the Comic Sans font, and then with black and white print in the Century Schoolbook font. The color coding is provided to help students recognize the vowel patterns and remember the related sounds. The pages face each other. Students should read the color-coded side first, and the black and white side second. When reading the black and white print, if a student gets stuck on a word, he or she can refer to the same word on the color-coded page to figure it out. Rereading the stories several times is recommended for developing comprehension, oral expression, and fluency.
