    Dave is having dinner with his family when his mother suddenly tells him to clean the dishes from the table quickly or he won't get any food for lunch. When Dave is doing the dishes, his mother yells at him for not looking at her when she speaks. She threatens to kill him if he doesn't finish the dishes on time. Dave's mother then stabs him with a carving knife, causing him to pass out. When Dave wakes up, his mother nurses his wounds and tells him to finish the dishes within 30 minutes. Dave's father shows no concern when Dave tells him what happened, and insists Dave get back to work.

    A CHILD CALLED IT by Dave Pelzer DIALOGUE

    The summer of 1971 (During dinner time when the family is having their dinner.Dave sits on his hands withhead thrust backward) Suddenly,the mother comes

    Mother

    : Get up! Move aside! Clean the dishes from the table.Quick!

    (Dave is shocked) Dave : Alright,mother.

    (Dave begins to collect the dishes from the dining room table) Mother : Dave!!(shouted)You better be quick or else you wont get any food for your lunch.Understand??! Dave Mother : Yes,maam.I will..(cleaning the dishes in the sink) : Look at my face when Im talking to you!Dont try to be rude!

    (Dave slowly raises his head) (Russel is rocking back and forth on his mothers left leg.)

    Mother

    : Are you deaf??!!(screaming)Look at me when Im talking to you Youll be a dead meat if you dont finish the dishes on time!

    (Mother snatches a carving knife from the counter top.Dave looks at his mothers eyes.Russel is still rocking his mothers leg until she loses her balance)

    Dave

    : Arghh!!(screaming)

    (Daves world is black and becomes unconscious ) (After a few minutes,Dave wakes up.His mother is nursing his wounds.)

    Mother

    : Now,you are fine.Get up and finish the dishes.You have only 30 minutes !Be quick!

    (Dave moves slowly in pain,to the kitchen) (Father is reading newspaper in living room.Dave stands before his father) Dave Father Dave Father : Fathermomomother has stabbed me : Hmm..why?(no emotion) : Mother said she wanted to kill me if I dont finish the dishes : So,you better go back and do the dishe...Oh,God!Why are you still here?Go,do your work.Dont let your mother know that Im talking to you. Dave Father : But.father : HmmIll tell you what..Ill keep this as a secret.Now,continue your work.Just go! (Dave is so shock and sad when his father dont even look at him and have no sympathy at all.Dave walks slowly away with frustration,to the kitchen..)
