223/5.56mm Remington
223 D(MIHGTOH lS.56mm HATO]
'!he 223 Remington resulted from
military development of a new
service rifle cartridge. Adopted in
February, 1964 as the 5.56mm Ball
Cartridge M193, it was introduced
as a commercial cartridge by
Remington one month earlier.
Based on the 222 Remington case
head dimensions, the 223 case is
only .060" longer than its parent.
However, it has greater powder
capacity because the case body was
lengthened and the neck shortened.
With equivalent bullet weights, the
223 enjoys a 100 to 300 feet/sec
velocity advantage. This advantage
is due to a combination of the
larger case and higher operating
pressures.
Almost any military cartridge,
once commercialized, is destined to
become an immediate success and
the 223 was no exception. The
ready supply of cases and an
excellent selection of 22 caliber
bullets has made the 223 one of our
most popular cartridges. It has also
found wide acceptance as a police
cartridge.
Original military and commercial
rifles had a 1-in-14 inch rifling
twist, later changed to 1-in-12
inches for better long-range
stability with the 55 grain service
bullet. However, when the military
adopted a heavier, 62 grain service
round, military rifles were fitted
with 1-in-7 inch twist barrels to
handle the new bullet. Several
commercial makers of semi-
automatic rifles followed suit and
changed to the faster twist.
Although the fast twist works
well with military ammo,
handloaders ran into a problem.
Most 22 caliber centerfire rifle
bullets are of light construction for
varmint hunting. When fired at
3200 feet/sec in a 1-in-7 twist rifle,
the bullet is rotating at over
300,000 rpm when it leaves the
muzzle. This rotation is more than
most varmint bullets can withstand
so they are literally ripped apart as
they leave the barrel.
If you have a rifle with the faster
1-in-7 twist, you should limit
muzzle velocity of sporting-type
bullets to around 2800 feet/sec.
Speer sells a 62 grain FMJ-BT
bullet which is a duplicate of the
bullet in the new M855 service
cartridge. The Speer 70 grain semi-
spitzer is also a good bullet in the
fast-twist rifles; however, be sure to
watch overall length, as the long
bullet can stick in the throat if
seated too long. Some rifle makers
recommend that bullets be crimped
if used in their semi-automatic
rifles. Three Speer 22 caliber bullets
feature a cannelure for easy
crimping. The 62 grain FMJ-BT
will give mediocre accuracy in 1-in-
12 inch barrels, and should be
restricted to rifles with 10 inch or
faster rifling twists.
The commercial IMI cases used
for our tests are built to the same
specification as military cases, so
load reduction is not required when
using surplus military brass with
these loads. Remember that
military cases have crimped
primers. The crimp MUST be
removed before re-priming.
The commercial 223 pressure
limit is 52,000 cup. These loads do
not exceed that limit.

Inasmuch as bolt action, target type rifles are not available
for this cartridge, test accuracy was somewhat limited. All of
the jacketed loads listed functioned perfectly through the action
of our semi-auto test rifle. The only cast bullet loads that would
operate the action of our test gun were maximum, or near maxi-
mum loads using I.M.R. 4227 powder. All other cast bullet
loads require manual operation of the bolt. All testing was done
with the new Remington 7 \12 primer.

In our testing of thi s cartridge, results were so good that
we did not list any one particular accuracy load for jacketed
bullets. All jacketed bullet weights shot well with I.M.R. 4198,
I.M.R. 3031 and I.M.R. 4895 powder and gave excellent ac-
curacy. H335 powder gave fine results with 40 grain jacketed
bullets, while RX7 was excellent with the 50 and 55 grain
weights. The new Remington 7 V2 primer was used for all testing.

The 223 Remington began as a military cartridge in 1957 and was later
introduced by Remington as a commercial round. The cartridge is now
chambered by numerous manufacturers in a variety of firearms. Be-
cause military surplus brass is readily available and inexpensive, the
223 is more popular than the 222 Magnum, and its popularity is still
growing.
When comparing the 222 Magnum and the 223, the case size appears
to be nearly identical. However, the 222 Magnum is about one tenth of
an inch longer and holds 1;2 to 1 grain more powder, 223 cartridges
should not be fired in a 222 Magnum as the case dimensions are dif-
ferent and the cases are likely to rupture, possibly causing injury.
The 223 is an excellent choice for varmint hunters and at the time of
this writing, the types of commercial actions in which this cartridge is
available, ranges from the Ruger Mini-14 semi-automatic to the
Remington 40 XB. Couple this wide assortment of firearms with
Homady's superb selection of 22 caliber bullets and the 223 is ade-
quate for any 22 Caliber use.
113
In our test rifle, the best accuracy and uniformity throughout the range
of Homady bullets was obtained with Win. 748 and IMR 4198. Note:
When using a 223 with rapid twist barrels (as in Ruger Mini-14's or
Z Colt's AR-I5A2) do not use SX bullets. The rapid twist can cause these
o fragile bullets to come apart in flight, especially at maximum
I- velocities. However, the 68 grain BTHP Match bullet requires a fast twist to
C!l fully stabilize it in flight. A 1 in 10" twist or faster is required. The 68 grain
Z data was fired in a Colt AR-ISA2 with a 1 in 7" twist rate and a 20" barrel.
- Also, some manufacturers of semiautomatic firearms recommend the
use of a crimped bullet to reduce the chance of the cycling of the action
W pushing a bullet deeper into the case and accordingly increasing
a:: pressures.

IMPORTANT: Recommended uses of IMR powder relate only to the appropriate IMR powder and not to those available from other
firms. Although the four digit numerical designations of other manufacturers products may be identical to those preceded by the
IMR prefix, the powders are different. To avoid potential confusion, gun damage and personal injury, therefore, handloaders
should be careful to note the prefix of recommended powder designations.

Vel oci ty and pressure readi ngs represent average val ues
obtained under controlled conditions. The values shown may vary sub-
stantially with the components and the reloading techniques employed.
We suggest the charge weights shown be reduced initially by 10% to
compensate for possible variations from the published data. The loads
may then be increased as pressure indications permit.

Te 30-06 cartridge was conceived in 1900,
when engineers at Springfeld Armory began
work on a battle rife to replace the 30-40
Krag-Jorgensen. Teir prototype emerged in
1901. Two years later the Model 1903 Spring-
feld appeared. Its 30-caliber rimless cartridge
headspaced on the shoulder, like the 8x57
Mauser. A 220-grain bullet at 2,300 fps made
the 30-03 a ballistic match for the 8x57 with a
236-grain bullet at 2,125.
A year after the 30-03s debut,
Germany switched to a new
154-grain 8mm spitzer at 2,800
fps. Te Americans coun-
tered with the Ball Cartridge,
Caliber .30, Model 1906. It
spat a 150-grain bullet at 2,700
fps. Ten someone decided to
shorten the case .07, to .494.
All 30-03 rifes were recalled for
rechambering.
Te frst 30-06 bullets were jack-
eted with an alloy of 85 percent
copper and 15 percent nickel. It
did not hold up at 30-06 veloci-
ties, and fouling rendered rifes inaccurate.
Tin plating reduced fouling, but over time,
tin cold-soldered to case mouths and could
cause pressure spikes. An alloy of zinc and
copper, 5-95 or 10-90, solved this problem. It
became known as gilding metal.
World War I demonstrated that bullets of high
ballistic coefcient increased efective range,
so the Army replaced the 150-grain 30-06
bullet with a 173-grain spitzer at 2,646 fps. In
1939, the Army adopted the M-2 load. With
a 152-grain spitzer at 2,805 fps, it saw U.S.
troops through World War II. At the same
time, it established an enviable reputation on
the target range. Rifemen began calling it
the all-around cartridge. During its frst 25
years, Winchesters Model 70 was sold in 18
chamberings but more than a third of rifes
shipped (208,218) were 30-06s!
Well-credentialed in all the worlds game
felds, the 30-06 will handily take any North
American animal and all but a few huge beasts
abroad. With 180-grain bullets, the 30-06 is a
near match, ballistically, for heavy-bullet loads
in the 7mm Remington Magnum. Given
identical bullets and 200-yard zeros, the 06
hits within 2 vertical inches of the 300 Win.
Mag. at 300 yards. It is chambered in more
rifes than any other round save, now, the
308 Win. You can buy ought-six ammo in
remote outposts, from the Canadian North to
sub-Saharan Africa. Such ubiquity endears this
cartridge to any traveler who has lost luggage.
Planning a hunt for Alaskan moose and Dalls
sheep, I didnt have to look past a converted
Springfeld in 30-06, with iron sights. It
downed both animals cleanly performance
thats distinguished this cartridge for more
than a century!

BULLET CHOICES FOR THE 30-06 SPRINGFIELD
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Te loads listed here were developed using standard commercial
brass. Military brass has less case capacity because of its heavier
construction, resulting in a smaller combustion chamber, and high-
er pressures. We recommend caution when using military brass,
and suggest starting at or below the minimum loads listed. Ad-
ditionally, if your brass originally had crimped primers, this crimp
MUST be removed prior to re-priming.

Te 9mm Parabellum is 111 years young.
Happy birthday! Being asked to write a
few words on the most popular handgun
cartridge ever designed is a somewhat
intimidating task, as theres been enough
words expended on Georg Lugers crea-
tion to fll a Manhattan phone book, but
its easy to appreciate why this round has
been so popular for so long. Economi-
cal and versatile with moderate recoil, it
can be loaded with a wide range of bullet
weights and powders and fll a variety of
roles, ranging from the deadly serious
task of self-defense, to casual plinking or
introducing a new shooter to the world
of centerfre handguns. Tere are several
very good reasons why it can be found
in the maga-
zines of action
pistol shoot-
ers, as it easily
makes minor
power factor
and can be
incredibly ac-
curate. Many
Open Division
USPSA shoot-
ers have also
discovered that,
properly loaded and launched from a cus-
tom pistol that locks up like a bank vault,
the round can be driven hard enough to
make major PF too, though those loads
are both beyond SAAMI specs and the
scope of this book.
Designed from the outset as a high pres-
sure cartridge, the 9mms limited case
capacity makes it a little trickier to reload
than say, the 45ACP. A small decrease
in OAL can produce a large increase in
pressure, so stick to the recommended
minimum lengths in your reloading
manual. Its generally OK to load longer
than book values, up to the point where
the bullets ogive approaches the lands;
for certain loads in certain guns a longer
round will produce better accuracy.
Which ones? Terein lies the science and
mystery of reloading youll have to do
your own experiments to fnd out.
As long as there are still frearms being
built, you can bet a large quantity of
them will be chambered in 9mm Para.
Heres to another century of life for this
exceptional cartridge.

BULLET CHOICES FOR THE 9MM LUGER (PARABELLUM)
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Like most pistol cartridges, the 9mm headspaces on the case mouth. When loading for
this cartridge, bell the case mouth just enough to reliably guide the bullet into position
and then secure the bullet with a taper crimp. Using this seating and crimping technique
will help ensure proper headspacing.
Te S.A.A.M.I. overall cartridge lengths for this cartridge are 1.000 min. and 1.169
max. We suggest seating on the higher end of this range, provided that the longer rounds
will function well in your particular frearm.
Tis load data is not +P rated and does not exceed the parameters for standard 9mm Luger
pressures.

Not only is the grand 38 Special one of the
classic cartridges of all time, but at about 115
years old, it has aged gracefully, adapting and
re-inventing itself as the decades have passed.
As one of the rare few cartridges making
the transition from black powder to todays
cutting-edge, high performance loadings, the
38 Special is, simply put Special.
Based on the 38 Long Colt, the S&W 38 Spe-
cial was frst chambered in the S&W Model
of 1899, with the bullet weight jumping from
150 to 158 grains. Te Model of 1899 was
also the beginning of the equally classic S&W
K-frame revolver. Tat marriage of a stout
cartridge, well-suited for self-defense or law
enforcement, with the nearly perfect size of
the K-frame, created an instant success, and
remains so today.
While many of todays handgun-
ners are more comfortable with
a semi-auto, legions of todays
handgunners including me
cut their teeth on that classic
158-grain round-nosed lead 38
Special load. Eventually, due to
demand from law enforcement
and the consumer market, more
efective loads were developed,
ultimately resulting in todays
high-performance defensive
factory loads. But even many of
those early loads remain efective.
During the early years of my
police career, a 6 S&W Model
10, loaded with 158-grain LSWC bullets, rode
in my duty holster. Even now, I wouldnt feel
under-gunned with that set-up!
When I was 16, and a certifable gun-crank, I
invested about 20 hard-earned dollars in a Lee
loader, a can of Unique, a 100-pack of prim-
ers and a hundred 158 grain LSWC bullets.
After getting things sorted out, I loaded my
frst centerfre cartridge a 38 Special. As
time passed, I joined the police department,
becoming a member of the pistol team com-
peting in that timeless tradition of the PPC
match. From 1975 to 1979, I fred upwards
of 25,000 rounds of 38 Special 148-grain
wadcutter loads yearly, honing my skills.
Tat background of precision target shoot-
ing has paid dividends to this day, making
me a better all-around marksman with rifes
or handguns. And its all because of the 38
Special and its ability to efortlessly manage
self-defense, accuracy, ease of re-loading and
economy. I hope 100 years from now, reload-
ing manuals will still be touting the classic
38 Special!

BULLET CHOICE FOR THE 38 SPECIAL
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Loading the .38 Special with slower burning powders like A-No.5 or HS-6 will produce
the best results in barrels four inches or longer. In short barreled revolvers, faster burning
powders like A-No.2 or WST are more efcient.
When loading for the 38 Special, as with any revolver cartridge, seat the bullet so that the
top of the cannelure is just visible above the case mouth and then give it a good roll crimp.
Te crimp should be such that you can just see the case mouth beginning to deform the
ridges in the cannelure.

After the introduction of the N-Frame Smith
& Wesson 38/44 Outdoorsman and Heavy
Duty revolvers around 1930, experiment-
ers such as Phil Sharpe, Doug Wesson,
Elmer Keith and others began stoking the .38
Special to signifcantly higher pressures (and
velocities) than factory loads. Ultimately, the
decision was made to lengthen the case and
call it Magnum, the frst
of its kind. Tis joint efort
between Smith & Wesson and
Winchester resulted in the 357
Magnum cartridge appearing
in 1935. Te S&W revolvers
were marvelous, high-grade
guns with each being custom-
built for the owner, along with
a certifcate of registration
specifying features, accuracy
and for whom it was built. It
was by far the most expensive
gun in the company line. It
was Te Great Depression
and sales were expected to
be limited, however, it sold
remarkably well. Tis gun and
cartridge signifcantly changed
the future of handgunning.
In the post-World War II era, the popularity
of the 357 Magnum grew to amazing status.
Many guns have been thus chambered and
have included small-frame revolvers, many
sizes of double and single action six-guns,
single shots and a variety of rifes. It has
served well for hunting, defense, precision
target work and law enforcement applications.
Frankly, few revolver cartridges can boast of
such extreme versatility, especially
when handloaded.
Being primarily an outdoorsman and shooter,
the 357 Magnum has served me well. It has
taken black bear, deer, antelope and consider-
able lesser game. I know men that it has saved
from both man and beast.
While hunting varmints with a friend who
works for a major Eastern gun company and
feels that handguns are not efective beyond 20
yards, we stumbled onto a big jackrabbit that
jumped and bounded his way to a distant hill-
side then stopped. I reached for the Smith &
Wesson N-frame 357 Magnum with a 5-inch
barrel resting on my hip. He rolled his eyes in
total disbelief and mumbled something about
a steak dinner. In a sitting position, with my
back up against the pickup tire and elbows
resting between my knees, the sights were care-
fully aligned. Te rabbit jumped then landed
belly up, which was followed by the sound
of the hollow-point bullet hitting home. My
associate took more than 100 long paces to
retrieve him. More importantly, he picked up
the dinner tab. When kept within its proper
limits, it is truly an outstanding cartridge.

BULLET CHOICE FOR THE 357 MAGNUM
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Te 357 Magnum was, at the time of its introduction, the most powerful revolver car-
tridge in existence. Today it falls well short of that mark, but is still a relatively powerful
round.
38 Special ammunition can be safely and accurately fred through a 357 Magnum revolver,
and is excellent for practice and plinking. When loading full-power .357 rounds, we have
always had the best luck with slower powders like 2400, H110, and W296. When using
these slow powders, a small pistol magnum primer and a heavy roll crimp are necessary to
help achieve consistent ignition. We have had great results with the following procedure:
Seat the bullet to where you can just see the top edge of the cannelure.
Adjust your crimp so that the case mouth is deforming the ridges in the cannelure and
biting all the way to the bottom of the groove.

It is my privilege to introduce one of the most
respected handgun cartridges of all time, the
45 ACP. Spanning military history from the
time of horse mounted cavalry, to Tomahawk
missiles, this cartridge has served in all United
States military actions since its adoption in the
year 1911. Its enviable reputation for efective-
ness was earned during
two World Wars, and
in actions from Vera
Cruz to Vietnam as
well as all of the War
on Terrors desert/
mountain conficts to
date.
Tis cartridge, although
considered archaic
by some standards,
is useable in both
semi-automatic pistols
and revolvers and is
still used in modest
numbers today by
American law enforce-
ment ofcers, and in
even larger numbers
by civilian shooters for
defense and sport.
Te standard cartridge is a 230-grain full
metal-jacketed projectile at a nominal 850 feet
per second. Tough its efectiveness is ques-
tioned by some, most of the naysayers havent
been in a tight spot with a handgun. Although
not necessarily the best handgun cartridge
made for hunting purposes, the quantum
leaps forward in bullet design and perform-
ance over the last two decades make it a rock
solid choice for personal defenseand it will
work for hunting if you need it too.
I started carrying a 1911 pistol in 1968 and I
dont recall ever feeling uncomfortable about
only having the 45 ACP for defense.
During my tenure serving as operations ofcer
at the American Pistol Institute/Gunsite with
Colonel Jef Cooper, many of the positive
attributes of the 45 ACP cartridge were rein-
forced by my experiences working, teaching
and shooting it in quantity. Having used the
45 ACP for hunting a bit, it is my opinion,
that with the correct projectile, placed well, at
an efective reasonable range, the cartridge is
very functional on deer-sized animals.
Having taught in my
own business since
1983 with I.T.C. and
Tunder Ranch, Inc.
and while teaching
literally tens of thou-
sands of students over
that thirty year span,
the single most prolifc
handgun cartridge I
have seen in attendance
to the school is the 45
ACP.
If I taught for thirty
more years, I believe
that trend would
continue. It will be
some time far in the
future before the .45
caliber will not be present on the fring line,
whether at paper targets or in real life combat.
Te 45 ACP has a place of honor in frearms
historyand it is well deserved.

BULLET CHOICES FOR THE 45 AUTO
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Te 45 ACP is a great choice for competitive shooters and plinkers alike. A-No.2, W231,
and A-No.5 are the powders that we use most commonly in the lab.
Like most pistol cartridges, the 45 ACP headspaces on the case mouth. When loading for
this cartridge, bell the case mouth just enough to reliably guide the bullet into position
and then secure the bullet with a taper crimp. Using this seating and crimping technique
will help ensure proper headspacing.
