DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA BEAM ANALYSIS REVISION Q1 2006/07 SEMESTER1

1.

An overhanging beam ABCDE, length 25 m, is supported on rollers at A and hinged at D. If the beam is loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 3 kN/m on span AB, an inclined load of 5 kN acts at C and a vertical load of 8 kN at E, as shown in Figure 1, i) ii) Find the support reactions at A and D State the equations of the axial force, shear force and bending moment for spans AB, BC, CD and DE. State the sign convention used. Draw the axial force, shear force and bending moment diagrams, giving the main values of these functions. Determine also the location and the value of the maximum bending moments. Determine the location of the point of contra-flexure (PCF), if any.

iii)

iv)

(It is easier to plot the above functions using graph paper) (25 marks)
