Part B

Australian Designers
Section 1: Design Process
1. Read Evaluating success. List the financial and personal rewards that Dinosaur Designs' partners can enjoy because of their company's success. They can enjoy their success because when they sell their pieces in the shops, they see the happiness and fulfilment on peoples face and how they will cherish their carefully crafted piece that Dinosaurs Design Company have made. They also celebrate their success on crafting pieces for charity events and then auctioning them off and when they hear stories about people that work for them and how they as a child saved up money so they could buy something that they cherished when they were just a kid. 2. Look at the Dinosaur Designs' career path. What things indicate the company's success and popularity? The things that indicate the companys success and popularity were the individual pieces of jewellery they started selling at Paddingtons markets, Sydney. They saw how people were buying the jewellery instead of the hand painted cloths. They started creating more and more pieces of jewellery which sold quickly and they made money. They only realised that the jewellery was selling after two years of selling at Paddingtons markets. 3. Develop a flow chart of a design process undertaken by the team at Dinosaur Designs.

4. Dinosaur Designs uses specialist designers for some aspects of their work, for example, architects and graphic designers. Compare the design process used to design Dinosaur Designs' jewellery and that used by the product designer Angelo Kotsis. What are the similarities and differences between the two processes? Designer Similarities Differences Design Process of o Both have steps o One explains how to Dinosaur Designs o Both made create the object, prototypes to see the other tells you Angelo Kotsis what the design how they chose the would look like, and designs also to test how the o Angelo Kotsis tells us prototypes would be how he was inspired made by the torches and o wanted to create something new and different o The design project for the torch had a lot of testing involved o One had pictures, the other didnt o

5. The Dinosaur Designs team are passionate about their work. They use a particular language to communicate their process of design, for example, hand-felt and finessing. Select these words and in the context of the passage, discuss what the designer means by them. The term hand felt in the text is meant when the team at dinosaurs designs work with their hands in sculpting pieces of jewellery. And finessing means in the term of design is to see what is in fashion and how they can show that in their pieces of jewellery.

Section 2: Factors influencing design

1. Visit the Gallery of work. Touch, feel and look are important to Dinosaur Designs. Look at three images and describe them in terms of the elements of design, such as line, colour and texture. o Louis Vuitton Chess Piece: Line: Colour: the colours are very simple and basic, which makes it elegant Texture: from the picture, the chess pieces look smooth and the board and box look as if they have a rough, but smooth texture. o Silver Resin Inlay Jewellery: Line: Colour: The silver and dark red have a really nice blend together. The earrings look as if they are worm to look at. Texture: The silver looks smooth and the resin in the middle look as if it has a bumpy fell to it. o Dinosaur Designs Glass products: Line: Colour: The colours are very bold colours. The colours have more of a warm feel to it. Texture: The texture of most glass objects are smooth, therefore the texture of these glass products are smooth. You can tell this by the reflection of the light. 2. Dinosaur Designs manufactures all their resin pieces in their own studio. What kinds of Occupational Health & Safety practices might they have to consider for employees working in a studio or workshop environment? The kinds of Occupational Health & Safety Practices those employees have to consider is that resin can be very dangerous. Some of the more serious cases is that if there is contact with your eyes, you can potentially go blind because the resin hardener is very toxic. If there is contact with your skin, it is very possible to get a skin irritation or a reaction to the smell. DO NOT CONSUME THE RESIN. It contains toxins which are not meant to be contained. If consumed, seek medical attention immediately.

3. List some of the reasons people wear jewellery. Describe your favourite piece of jewellery and the reasons it is important to you. The reason why people wear jewellery is because it creates a statement to their outfit. It also dresses up what they are wearing. Some people wear jewellery because it was given to them by someone that means a lot to them. It could be their great grandmother, the grandparent thats past away, their mum, their dad, etc My favourite piece of jewellery is a pair of pearl earrings my parents gave to me for my birthday. I cherish them because I can keep them with me forever and that they will remind me of my parents if anything bad ever happens to them. That is why they mean a lot to me. 4. Identify the contribution Dinosaur Designs makes to the improvement of everyday life. Dinosaur designs make an improvement to everyday life because they are always coming up with new ideas for all generations and that they can go and live with the fact that they are inspiring young adolescents around the world to follow in their footsteps and to achieve their own goal. They are also creating new shapes for pieces of jewellery and other things such as chest pieces, glass products, and others that will hopefully help brighten up our future.

Section 5: Selects, analyses, presents and applies research

1. Experimenting and testing of design ideas was important for the development of Dinosaur Designs' first innovative products for Paddington markets. Describe the experimentation and testing that was carried out The experimentation and testing that was carried out when Dinosaur Designs Company first started was when they had a stall in Paddingtons markets. They tried hand painting tee-shirts alongside making their own jewellery. They

soon found out that the jewellery was selling and the tee-shirts wont. The started to sell more jewellery, this was a hit. Soon after, they were experimenting on hand-painted resin for jewellery products. After this step took place, they had their own jewellery workshop at Kings Cross and started selling their jewellery through retail outlets in Melbourne and Sydney. They soon became popular and were asked to make other things such as a chest bored for Louis Vuitton and going to charities and then later on selling other projects like their doll house they made for a charity event. 2. Dinosaur Designs are influenced to a certain extent by current trends. What sources of information would be particularly useful for jewellery designers? The team at Dinosaur Designs could get inspiration from anywhere such as looking through picture books, art works, paintings, sculptures, and even a plain bus ticket can take your imagination to a certain extent, also fashion trends that are new to the season.

Section 6: Mixed material technologies

1. If you were to design a small pendant how could it be mass produced? Research the different ways in which you could produce multiple copies of this object. Firstly, if you want to mass produce a pendant, you should make sure that it is a seller. If it isnt, really there is no point. To mass produce a pendant you should create a shape that appeals to people because it is not you should create a shape that appeals to people because it is not your ordinary shape. Also when mass producing, make a multiple moulds of the shapes and gather a reasonable amount of resin, polymer clay etc so that you never run out, make them and sell them. Simple as that! 2. For the small pendant research how it can be finished. How does it affect the visual appeal of the object? If the pendant is finished in a gloss, it looks a lot nicer and the visual appeal for it would be wow that looks nicely finished. If you were selling the pendant without it being polished or sanded, the visual appeal would be that it doesnt stand out from the crowd, not many people would look at it. But if the style of the pendant, say for a skull, it would look better if it was left unpolished or un-glazed because it is more of a masculine look. 3. Research other products made from polyester resin, e.g. bathroom vanities, bathtubs, canoes, surfboards. Compare the characteristics of these products with the characteristics of Dinosaur Designs' products. Smooth Shiny Polished Translucent Coloured Curved Odd shaped
