    ENGINE

    Four-cylinder petrol engines Double overhead camshafts, 16 valves. Continually variable valve timing (CVVT) on the inlet or exhaust side. Three-way catalytic converter with Lambda sensor. Electronic engine management. The turbocharged petrol engines also have twin-scroll turbo and charge-air cooler (Intercooler). Four-cylinder diesel engines Direct-injection common rail turbodiesel. Overhead camshaft, 8 valves. Charge-air cooler (Intercooler). Two-way catalytic converter with EGR. Electronic engine management. Four-cylinder Bi-Fuel engine Bi-Fuel engine which runs on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with petrol as reserve fuel. Double overhead camshafts, 16 valves. Continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) on the inlet side. Three-way catalytic converter with Lambda sensor. Electronic engine management.

    DRIVELINE
    Front-wheel drive. Transverse engine. Five-speed manual gearbox. As an alternative, there is a five-speed*, electronically controlled automatic transmission with adaptive shifting pattern, winter mode and lock-up function which reduces fuel consumption when cruising. *Not available with the Volvo S40 1.6, 1.8i, diesels and Bi-Fuel.

    ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
    Battery capacity 12 V, 520A (petrol engines) or 600 A (diesel engines). Alternator 80 A and for 1,8i 100A.

    STEERING GEAR
    Power-assisted rack and pinion steering gear with progressive servo. Steplessly adjustable steering wheel, vertically. 3:1 turns between end stops. Turning circle 10,6 m.

    BRAKES
    Power-assisted anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), ventilated discs at front. Electronic brake distribution between front and rear brakes (EBD). Diagonalsplit braking system.
