Positive Impacts
There have been several positive social impacts as a result of the
annual Rhythm and Vines festivals. For example, the second
Rhythm & Vines event in 2010, raised much-needed funds for
the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater San Diego region (an
organisation providing support of youth in safe, affordable and
fun environments. The organisations overall aim being to inspire
and enable children to be academically successful and lead a
good and healthy lifestyle). The Rhythm & Vine event famously
pairs music and wine to raise money and awareness for
organisations like this one. It is evident that from this that even
international individuals are impacted after an event such as
Rhythm and Vines, and how positive these impacts in fact are for
others not directly involved in the event. Even though the 2010
RNV festival was only the second, and therefore still a frilly newly
introduced national event, the beneficiary of it had already been
proven.
It is evident just how positive the impact Rhythm and Vines
indeed is on the people of New Zealand also, with several
accounts of individuals praising the festival. Its a win-win for
everyone, said Terese Charlson of PRP Wine International, For
instance, Rhythm & Vine gives us a chance to showcase our
personalized wine service while allowing people to try new and
delicious wines! I used to be in the Boys and Girls Club and just
like it got me involved in after-school sports, this event is getting
people involved in something good!
Although it may not be as obvious in a social impact analysis of
an event, the attendees of RNV themselves effectively realise the
positive outcomes the festival can provide. They have realised
that indulging for the sake of indulging in the event is one thing,
but indulging in the name of charity is also another uniquely
satisfying situation of which they are exposed to attending
Rhythm and Vines. Kelly Golden, a representative from Hotcha
Salsa, has identified how charity plays a big role in her company
we are extremely happy and excited to be at this particular event
because our presence contributes to the quality of the event, so
more dollars can be raised for the Boys and Girls Clubs.
Negative Impacts
An issue, and therefore negative impact for locals in Gisborne is
the traffic congestion. With most of the festivalgoers travelling to
Gisborne via car, the Gisborne roads cannot cope with this
increase/influx of traffic. Along with this, comes a further effect
of this being the shortage of parking, resulting with people
illegally parking on pathways etc. This of course provides serious
inconvenience and stress to locals when driveways and exits to
buildings are blocked. However Rhythm and Vines event
planners have taken action to minimise these impacts on the
public, by putting several detour routes in place around the
festival grounds in attempt to aid traffic flow and limit
congestion. However this action affects residents as well due to
detours changing peoples daily driving routes for getting to and
from work for example. As of the 2012 RNV festival, a detour
route was put in place on State Highway 2 between Opotiki and
Whakatane, aiding the festival attendees on their return home
who had been queuing out of Gisborne for hours on end.
It is noticeable how a number of different groups of people are
negatively impacted by aspects of the Rhythm and Vines festivals.
A particular scenario identifying this can was after the 2012
Rhythm and Vines festival. On the afternoon of the 1
st
of January,
just after RNV attendees has called in a rather wet and miserable
New Year, two people ignored road detour warnings whilst
leaving the festival grounds and drove through flood waters,
becoming stuck in the attempt to cross. Because of this, a search
and rescue team had to be called to both rescue and airlift the
trapped victims and transport them Whakatane Hospital.
Significance of Impacts
The significance of both positive and negative social impacts of Rhythm and Vines are outlined in the duration of their effect on people or
whether they are short or long term impacts. An example of a significant short-term impact on the local people (not attending the RNV
festival) is the traffic congestion and detours surrounding the festival grounds. Gisborne roads cannot cope with the increase/influx of
traffic into/out of Gisborne city. Along with this, shortage of parking becomes another problem for the local people. However, with the
Rhythm and Vines festival only running for a three-day period, it is evident that these traffic problems are only temporary, and therefore
can be classed as only short-term social impacts on the locals. Thus, although this is a short-term impact, the overall significance of it is less
compared to others, such as the positive social impacts of the festival.
The positive impacts Rhythm and Vines has had and still shows to have socially show a much higher level of significance over the negative
impacts. With Rhythm and Vines festival raising such a substantial amount of money annually, this has lead festival organisers and
managers to use these funds to aid others in need, such as for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater San Diego region. From this it is
evident that that there is a unique international social impact from the festival, with particular people in need benefiting from the events
donations. More importantly, this social impact shows great significance as people not directly attending or organising the event are
financially benefited from it in the long-term.
Overall, the significance of the social impacts the Rhythm and Vines festival annually has shows obvious positives over negatives. With the
substantial profit raised from the festival alone has shown benefits for the chance of international organisations such as the Boys and Girls
Clubs of the Greater San Diego region to have a healthy and safe lifestyle, with the financial aid to endeavour in educational opportunities
such as being able to afford/attend School. With traffic problems such as congestion, detours and lack of parking in Gisborne city, the public
are only impacted by these effects for the duration of the RNV festival, and therefore only show social impact/significance in the short-
term.
