The goal at this level is to continue increasing the students vocabulary and to have them use simple sentences in speech and writing. The program should be seen as an opportunity to practice what they see here and what they have seen/will see at school.
Program content: Vocabulary (colours, numbers, clothes, food, sports, animals, feelings, etc.) Describing things and people (feelings, appearance, clothes) Prepositions of place (in, on, under, next to, over, behind, in front of, between) Verbs to be and to have (s.pres./s.past/future) A few other verbs (s.pres./s.past/pres.prog./future) Mostly affirmative sentences Negative sentences in the present and present progressive (needed in games) Questions in the present (also for games)
Blueprint of a class A class is split into two parts. One part has grammar exercises and one has games where the students use the vocabulary and notions they have seen here or at school. Some examples of games are shown in the following course plan, but its best to choose games based on the students involved. The games are ones I have invented or taken from books and websites over the years.
Example of an eight-week course plan
Class 1 -Get to know and evaluate the students -Pick a playing card to get a number (keep only eights and up) and tell me about yourself: The card the students pick tells them how many things they have to say. -What are you wearing?: Students describe their clothes. -An activity where you can evaluate how comfortable they are with numbers. If they have trouble, you can practice for a few minutes in subsequent classes. -An activity where you can evaluate how quickly they come up with vocabulary in various categories (board game or Cattergories, which is a modified Scattergories) Example: Put the following categories on the board: animals, food, places, and colours. Give the students a letter. They have to find a word that starts with that letter for each category.
Class 2 -Riddle or questions on the board (can be review material or just fun things or trivia). This tells the students to start thinking in English and gives them something to do while waiting for everyone to get to class. -Have them describe their clothes -Verb to be (s.pres./s.past/future): Give them sentences to translate or have them write their own sentences. -Game section: find the pairs (animal vocabulary), board game with vocabulary and simple questions to answer
Class 3 -Questions on the board -Have them describe their clothes -Verb to have: The students can translate sentences or write their own. -Game of your choice
Class 4 -Questions on the board -Describe their clothes -Describe people (feelings, appearance, clothes) Possible activities: - Clowning Around: You have a number of clowns on a sheet. You or a student chooses a clown and describes it; the others try to find the clown. (Guess Who? can be used in this way as well). - Students can also describe people in photos or magazine pictures. -Vocabulary activity: find the pairs, say words that start with, etc.
Class 5 -Questions on the board -Have them describe their clothes -Describing people: see class 4. This time, also have one person choose a clown/character and the others ask yes/no questions to figure out which clown/character it is. -Game: board game, 5 Words Against the Clock (see end of document for instructions), Cattergories, mimes, etc.
Class 6 -Questions on the board -Have them describe their clothes -Verb to go (s.pres./pres.prog./s.past/future): translate, own sentences, other written activities. -Game of your choice
Class 7 -Questions on the board -Have them describe their clothes -Prepositions of place (in, on, under, over, next to, behind, in front of, between) Possible activities: -match word with picture -Wheres the Number? (see instructions at the end of the document) -Paper Fold (see instructions at the end of the document) -Game of your choice

5 Words Against the Clock: The group is split into two or more teams. One member of one team comes to the front of the class. That student has a card with 5 words on it. The student has one minute to give clues so his/her teammates can guess all five words. Then, the next team sends a student to the front to do the same with a different card. The winning team is the team that guesses the most words. Wheres the Number?: Students look for numbers hidden in the classroom and write down where they find them. Paper Fold: Students draw what you tell them to (e.g. Draw a cat under a table.) Then, if they are strong enough, you can have them write sentences that describe their pictures.
