Chemistry Labreport Measurements and Accuracy
Purpose:
The purpose of section 1 is to know how to determine the precision and accuracy
of different glassware items.
The purpose of section 2 is determine the density of salt water solution using the
most precise and accurate piece of glassware.
Hypothesis:
The density of water at the different temperature in the result will follow the
reference for density of water at the different temperature, and the density of water
does not depend on the glassware. Different glassware, the density of the water is still
the same.
Materials:
1. Two 100mL beaker
2. Two 50mL beaker
3. One 10mL graduated cylinder
4. One 10mL pipette with suction device
5. Distilled water
6. Saltwater solution A or B
Procedure:
Section 1: Choosing the most precise and accurate instrument to measure density
1. Measure a dry 100mL beaker.
2. Measure a dry 10mL graduated cylinder.
3. Measure a 50mL beaker.
4. Record the mass of all above.
5. Fill another 100mL beaker with distilled water.
6. Measure the temperature.
7. Put 10mL water in
a) 100mL beaker
b) 10mL graduated cylinder
c) 10mL pipette
8. Record the volume for each.
9. Repeat 3 times for each glassware.
10. Use results to calculate the density of water.
11. Compare the accuracy to a reference in the experiment paper.
Section 2: Determination of saltwater density
1. Obtain solution A or B.
2. Record the label.
3. Use the most precise and accurate method from section 1.
4. Measure 10mL of the solution.
5. Put it in a clean and dry, previously weighed, 50mL beaker.
6. Record the mass.
7. Repeat 3 times.
8. Calculate the density of the solution.
9. Record them in table 2.

Conclusion:
The result from our experiment follows almost our prediction in the hypothesis
except one equipment that is a graduated cylinder. The temperature of the water is 29
Celsius and the reference for density of water at the different temperature tells that the
density will be around 0.95 but the result from graduated cylinder is 1.07.
Discussion:
The reason that the result we have got does not follow the hypothesis it may
because the equipment is not accurate enough. We could improve our experiment by
use other equipment to test that it accurate or not and use other water to try too.
Question:
Which equipment showed highest accuracy?
- In the result, almost every equipment showed very high accurate because they
showed the same data all the time except graduated cylinder.
In what other situations would you use the other equipment?
- In my opinion, these equipment that use in this experiment is enough for other
situation because they are accurate and can use for many things.
Why do you think your answer is not the same as the provided reference?
- Because the equipment might not accurate enough and the person who try this
experiment is not have skill enough to use the equipment.
What will happen if I slowly drop solutions A or B into a beaker with a
substance whose density is 1g/mL? Will it float on top or sink to the
bottom? Explain your answer.
- The solution will float on top because the density of the water that shows in the
experiment is 0.95mL and the solution has less density than the water. Follow the
theory if the solution has less density than water, it will float.
