Order: Psittaciniformes Family: Psitacidae

The Scarlet Macaw has the largest range of any macaw in the
genus Ara. There are two subspecies of the scarlet macaw. The
Central American subspecies A. m. cyanoptera ranges from Mexico to
Panama and is distinguished by blue on the wings instead of green.
The South American subspecies A. m. Macao is smaller and ranges
from Colombia to Paraguay.

Although the scarlet macaw has a large range the population is
decreasing. Due to its large range the IUCN has listed the species as
Least Concern. However it is listed as Endangered by the USFW
and as APPENDIX I by CITES. Like other psittacines this species
is protected by the Wild Bird Conservation Act (WBCA).
